Dear Hawk Fan

Dear Hawk Fan,

I am really sick of you saying: "I wouldn't mind ISU beating us every now and then if they actually went on and won some games" or some variation of your delusional fantasy that the cyclones secretly play a "one game season".

First of all, you are a narcissistic asshole and completely full of shit.  Sure beating Iowa is nice, but I don't know anyone associated with the cyclones that wouldn't trade that win and a 4-8 season for a 9-3, 8-3, 7-5 or even 6-6 record.  Would we trade a 4-8 record that included a win over Iowa for a 5-7 one that didn't, hell yes, but so would you.  A losing record is a losing record, but if you're going to have a consolation prize it's beating your instate rival.

Second,  ISU was the better team on September 10th and they still are. The difference in performance is simply strength of schedule.  If ISU had Iowa's schedule they would be 6-0 right and with games coming up against Minnesota and Indiana they would likely be 8-0.  With Purdue left on the schedule they would finish at least 9-3.  Even assuming theychoke as the hawks did under the pressure of a Happy Valley crowd at worst they finish 8-4, go to a good bowl game and Paul Rhoads wins coach of the year, instead they will likely finish 4-8 to your giddy delight.  And Iowa will likely finish 7-5 though they will do so having beat nobody in the top 70.

Likewise, If Iowa played ISU's schedule they would be favored in 2 or 3 games (excluding the ISU game, which you were favored but as you may recall, lost), against UNI, Kansas and possibly UConn.  In other words if we switched schedules, Iowa finishes 3-9, and ISU 9-3.  So don't flatter yourself, it's not that ISU collapsed after mustering enough for an impressive performance against you as you would like to imagine, rather, you root for a mediocre team with a really easy schedule. You were lucky that the cyclones didn't beat the hawks by more than they did, even you admitted that in September.  After you win the next two games over really awful competition your attitude most certainly will have shifted and you will go around talking about you received an "Iowa State wakeup" call that led to your miraculous improvement.  No such call occurred and Iowa State did not use all of their magic fairy dust against you.  Nothing has changed, you sucked in September and you still will suck in November.

Sincerely,

Annoyed Cyclone

So...Iowa could go 4-0 in November and still suck?

Iowas November schedule is Michigan, MSU, @Purdue, @Nebraska. 3 of those teams will be ranked, and Iowa has taken better teams than the one they have this year to West Lafeyette and been beaten.

Yes, ISU was better on the 10th of September. What is also apparent is that they’re regressed since then, while Iowa has improved. How much Iowa has improved is up for debate, but they’ve gotten better. Iowa State’s last 3 games haven’t been competitive.

The second paragraph is so logical..

I’d almost think you weren’t a Hawk fan.

or - the last 3 games ISU has played was against stiff competition

and the first 3 were against crap.

Wait...

Have ISU and Iowa been playing against the same teams the last 4 games? That’s amazing!

Wait, Iowa played a complete patsy in ULM,
benefited from a complete second half meltdown by Pitt,
scored 3 points against a middle of the pack Penn State team,
and finally beat NW after almost blowing a huge lead at home.

Iowa State beat UCONN, who is better than ULM and probably a bit worse than Pitt,
lost to a 4 star laden rankedTexas team whose only loss is to national title contender OU,
lost to a ranked baylor team with a freakish heisman contender at QB,
and lost to an MU team whose is now 3-3 with losses to undefeated OU, KSU and ranked ASU.

The caliber of teams that ISU has had to play is just ridiculous compared to the crap on Iowa’s schedule. And you haven’t even gotten to Indiana, Minnesota or Purdue.

Yes ISU has played like crap in the last three games, but if they played the same teams Iowa did this year, the would probably have the same record.

Iowa has not magically become a better team since the ISU game. They just have one of the easiest BCS schedules in the country.

by cyhh on Oct 19, 2011 10:14 AM CDT reply actions

Iowa can go 7-5 this year

without a win over a BCS team with a winning record. win over two crap non BCS teams, Pitt, NW, Purdue, Indiana, and Minny. and hawk fan translates this to “7-5 in rebuilding year, because we’re an elite program”.

If I had to define 'Cyclone Fan', I would direct them here.

Complaining that Iowa fans think that ISU only care about the Iowa-ISU game…..a month after the game finished.
Saying “ISU had Iowa’s schedule they would be 6-0 right” after a 52-17 curbstomping by a very average Missouri.

The ability of ISU fans to give reality the finger is something that never gets old for me.

Reality is...

that average MU team is better than anyone the Hawks have played so far this year.

Who do you honestly think is better on the Hawks schedule?

by cyhh on Oct 24, 2011 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

That is a completely different subject.

The question raised in this post is “would an ISU team that got shellacked by Mizzou 52-17, be 6-0 with Iowa’s schedule?”
And the answer is a belly-laughing ‘no’. Thus the author giving reality the finger.
I don’t mean that as an insult either, thanks to ISU fans, my annual prediction of a National Championship game for the Hawkeyes, looks fairly rational in comparison.

by DoYouLoveHawksorHate'Merica? on Oct 25, 2011 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Different Subject??? That was the whole point...

You like most hawkeye fans fixate on one point, build a straw man and attack it. I conceded that ISU may or may not have lost the Penn State game as Iowa did. I think Iowa is a better team than Penn State and should have won that game, and I think ISU is better than Iowa so by that logic yes I think they would have had a chance against Penn State and I think Missouri is a lot better team than all three of them (IA,ISU,PSU). Yes, Missouri had ISU’s number and Rhoads got out coached that game trying something that worked the previous year and not anticipating that Missouri would come in prepared and adjust leading to a big mismatch. But Penn State is the only decent team Iowa has played since ISU and I think they are in the same class as Iowa and ISU also with a cake walk schedule. But fine, I’ll give you Penn State ISU is 6-1 right now with Iowa’s schedule and finishes 8-4…. who else could beat the cyclones? Pittsburg is the only team that could come close but after they collapsed against Iowa, barely beat Maine, lost to Utah I don’t have any reason to think they would do any better against the cyclones, but shoot even if I gave you that (which i won’t) ISU still is 5-2 and and finishes at worst 7-5 like Iowa having beat nobody but a bunch of bottom feeders. Iowa and Iowa State are both decent teams in the top 50 but not the top 30 and I have ISU on top, I expect you to feel the opposite is true. But that said my point was that you guys would not be rationale and do exacty what you and Carolinahawk are doing….suddenly think that after playing a patsy schedule while ISU goes up against murders row allow yourself to believe Iowa has “seen the light” while ISU collapsed. No Missouri is a good team, a very good team that was ranked in the top 20 this year that has had to play, like ISU, a brutal Big 12 schedule and has lost to Kansas State, Arizona St., Oklahoma (barely) and Oklahoma State all top 15 teams. If that makes them mediocre, well i guess i want some of whatever your smoking. Hansen had it right today in the Register, strength of schedule only helps you if you can beat the tough teams….

by IAStubborn on Oct 25, 2011 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Fixate on one point.

Namely this one “If ISU had Iowa’s schedule they would be 6-0 right [now]”
Thus the quotation marks.

I suppose the best question to ask here is...

What do you think ISU’s record would be with Iowa’s schedule? Just curious.

Thats a tough question to answer

In lieu of guessing a record, I will say that ISU would be favored in all except Penn St & Pitt (but the Pitt game would likely have been virtually even).

by DoYouLoveHawksorHate'Merica? on Oct 26, 2011 1:16 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

soooo

ISU is 6-1 or 5-2 right now if the schedules are reversed by your count. I said i thought they would be 7-0 or 6-1. So basically you think Penn State is better than I do. I think Iowa and Iowa State are both better than Penn State and Iowa should have won that game. If they played 10 times I think Iowa would probably win 7 of them as would ISU. Time will tell whose right. Either way it seems a stretch to say that a modest difference on how good penn state is makes me “give reality the finger”.

by IAStubborn on Oct 26, 2011 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Remember how I said 'giving the finger to reality"?

There is a reason I am the only one directly using YOUR quotes right now, as evidence of you ‘giving the finger to reality’
“If ISU had Iowa’s schedule they would be 6-0 right [now]”
This statement is absurd.
By implication you seem to be agreeing.

How the fuck...

is the statement ABSURD if, by your own admission, 5-1 with the same schedule would be somewhat realistic. 60 vs 5-1 is fucking absurd? You sound like your dipshit avatar.

I think we're all debating semantics here...

Let’s all just focus on the fact that DoYouLoveHawksorHate’Merica does at least admit the Big 12 schedule is much more difficult than Big 10… A daunting task for a Big 10er.

True

I nearly pissed myself when he didn’t say “ISU would have been killed by ULM. Those guys were salty!”

Really?

How can I say that a 3-4 football team that has lost its last 4 strait by scores of 14-37, 26-49, 17-52 & 17-33 (Against Texas, Baylor, Mizzou & TA&M) wouldn’t be undefeated with Iowa’s schedule?
Surprisingly, it really isn’t too difficult.
This discussion is getting a little too heated. To calm it down a little I will extend an olive branch & offer to tell you what its like to watch the team you follow in the Orange Bowl. (Spoiler alert—It’s AWESOME!!)

I'd be interested to see if

you still feel this way considering A.) the events of yesterday, and B.) that Penn State’s only loss to this point is Alabama, and they’re pretty good.

Not getting into the tired ISU in Big Ten debate with you,

but PSU is not that good. Even Penn State fans are amazed they’re 8-1. That offense is terribad.

Look, I love a hypothetical argument as much as the next guy,

but this CONSTANT “we’d kick ass with Iowa’s schedule” argument from ISU fan got state 2 years ago. We heard it then, and Iowa had road games at Penn State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan State that year. Give me a fucking break. Your schedule is what it is, everyone else in the B12 has the exact same schedule because you play everyone else.

I don’t know where ISU would be this year if they were in the B1G, and neither does anyone else. Then again, ISU is in the B12, so it doesn’t really matter anyway. Enjoy your win over Kansas this weekend, and then we’ll see you next year.

by CarolinaHawk on Oct 30, 2011 1:20 PM CDT reply actions

It is what it is

Your right, its the same schedule that everyone else has and the conference that went 27-3 in nonconference play is beating up itself, a good missouri team is 4-4, a very good A&M team has 3 losses… a bad conference is going to distribute losses just as a good one will just because your 9/10 when the 8 above you are really good doesnt mean you arent better than half of the teams in the B1G. So I dont really get your point. If you dont get that get that playing a schedule where you are favored in only 2 games (ISUs) you are likely to yield worse results than a schedule in which you are favored in 8 (Iowas), than I dont what more i can say. My only point was that ISU didnt implode as hawks suggest (nor did Iowa get better) and to anwser your question did the events of yesterday change my mind… no i think they proved my point… though i doubt hawk fans will be making the claim anytime in the near future. As for PSU I have a little more respect for them that they have been able to pull of 8 wins, they know how to win and so yeah i would be less confident today if ISU played them than the day I wrote this, and i probably would have moderated that comment a bit, something like “at least 5-1 and would have a chance at 6-0” if they had Iowa’s schedule would have been more accurate… but really if that is all you guys are harping about…..

who needs periods

That’s why you shouldn’t post on a smart phone on a couple hours of sleep. If it is any consolation I am sticking with my 7-5 pick for iowa. I figured they would probably lose to either NW or MN but in typical iowa fasion wil bounce back aqnd beat purdue and hopefully msu or nebraska. I do root for the hawks when they aren’t playing the clones and even try and make it to a game or two.

7-5 with a win over 1 team with a winning record

they should be so proud. and michigan wont be ranked come the end of the year anyway, so that wont be the “quality win” hawkeye fan wants to tell you it is this week.
