Tom Herman leaving Iowa State for Ohio State
Editor's Note: Herman has been named the Offensive Coordinator and primary playcaller at OSU as well. It makes much more sense now.
In a somewhat puzzling move, footballscoop.com is reporting that Tom Herman will be Urban Meyer's new QB coach at Ohio State. As of 5:30 PM, this has been confirmed by CBS as well.
From offensive coordinator to QB coach? This seems like a lateral move at best .A source in Iowa State football says with 100% certainty that Herman's job was not in jeopardy in any way, so we can remove that possible explanation.
Any suggestions for a replacement?

He see's it differently
He’s probably thinking one step back/laterally to take two steps forward by getting an OC job at one of the power schools. Just a guess.
Maybe we can get the dude from Boise State
Their head coach, I mean, to be OC. Hell, it’s better than being in whatever conference Boise is hanging out in…
Weis is a Jay hawk now
Not to excited about seeing another fat guy on the ku sideline

It’ll be a few years till he builds a team and by that time, he’ll have bolted for something more interesting.
This seems like a terrible move from KU's perspective
He couldn’t get it done at Notre Dame, where they had 4 & 5-star recruits lining up to play for them. How is he going to build a program at a place with as little history as Kansas?

funny to see you guys making fun of Weis as much as you are
makes me feel like our evaluations are closer to objective than I once thought.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Well, if it wasn't for being a bad coach, having a foopa, and being a big tool
he’d be a great coaching choice

In the long run
I think we’ll be ok. Lot of bright, young minds out there to run the spread offense with some fast recruits and a fair amount of depth.
My immediate concern is both bowl game preparation and play calling.

Yeah, probably
But it just sucks to keep losing talented coordinators to bigger programs. And Herman’s going to be QB coach, not OC? That really sucks. ISU needs consistency if they’re ever going to climb out of the cellar.

One coach
Does not a staff make. Barring any other set backs knock on wood we still retain 8 of our 9. Keep in mind that the 2009 to 2010 season was only the 3rd time since McCarney took over that our entire staff remained unchanged in the off season.
Good things can happen by guys moving on. Look at Ash going to Wisconsin. It brought in Elliott who I feel has done more for the development of LJ, Reeves and Benton than Ash ever would have.

Check that
Meant 2010 to 2011.
Ash left after 2009.

This hurts far less than losing wally or shane would IMO

Oh, definitely
But I still like the continuity of having a coordinator for 5+ years. Not necessarily likely at a place like ISU, but keeping the same system allows coaches to plug in new players without teaching new philosophies.

We should get one of those OC's from MAC....
Teams outta that league seem to put up 50 on the scoreboard every week

Just as our offense seemed to be turning the corner..But I’m sure lots of people would be proud to coach under CPR..Herman was a great hire..Let
s look up some mid-major team with an absurd amount of spread offense yards..and get Jamie on the phone we need to pay these boys

One thing those YouTube videos were great for
Was recruiting coaches, just not players. Bet a lot more guys think positively of ISU and Paul Rhoads than they did when Rhoads was trying to hire coaches in the winter of 08-09.

I agree with this completely
I think we’ll get a good up and coming type guy to come in. I mean so many people run the spread these days that finding someone to come in and pick up where herman has lead off wont be that hard IMO. plus, ISU looks like a much better place to be OC at right now than it did coming off the chizik years.
for all we know this is a blessing in disguise and someone great just might land here

Alright, new OC thoughts?
Todd Fitch – Homerun hire, current OC for USF, coached at ISU for three years under DMac
Kliff Kingsbury – Current OC for Houston, former TT QB, might be going to Texas A&M with Sumlin
Tony Petersen – Current Co-OC at Marshall, QB coach for two years at ISU
Another name
Blake Anderson – Southern Miss OC, may go to UNC with Fedora

Little Out There
Dave Baldwin – Utah State OC, punched Auburn in the mouth earlier this year. Has BCS coordinating experience.

I think Kingsbury won a coordinator of the year award

He’d be a helluva pick up.
