Making Memphis the Best Bowl Trip Ever!

If you haven't thought much about Memphis as a bowl destination, that 's understandable. Before the season, and as recently as a few weeks ago, Iowa State may have seemed an unlikely candidate to travel to Memphis to play in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. After all, the bowl had tie-ins were with the SEC and the Big East, and if two Big XII teams received BCS bowl bids as expected, the Big XII would just fulfill the conference's bowl slots. But the season ended with the SEC and the Big East having a shortage of bowl-eligible teams, and with Northern Illinois knocking Oklahoma out of a BCS slot, the Big XII had an extra team in Iowa State, and that's how the Cyclones ended up in the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock and Roll.

In the most basic form, making a trip to Memphis provides the Cyclones faithful with two perfect days for a fan. On the 30th, it starts with the Beale Street Parade, followed by the Bash on Beale, a pep rally for both teams fans, featuring the bands and spirit squads. You then have a choice of walking down Beale and catching the Blues, or attending the bowl's President's Gala, featuring a private performance by The Temptations. On the 31st, Gameday starts early, with the BBQ Bowl on the stadium grounds, and the Pre-Game Buffet featuring all-you-can eat BBQ and all-you-can drink for three hours before the game, with entertainment by the school bands and other performers. Kickoff for the 54th Annual Liberty Bowl is set fort 2:30 p.m. CST, meaning that the sun will be setting as the game goes on. Gameday becomes New Year's Eve, and Beale Street beckons as a place to ring in the new year. Memphis has an outstanding local restaurant scene, and you start the year off right late-night eats at one of several local places that stay open-late.

If you can make it early or stay late, there are several other bowl events, such as the Players & Coaches Luncheon, and the Team Welcome Party. There are also numerous other attractions and things to do in Memphis, such as tour Graceland Mansion, visit the pandas at the zoo, or relive history at the National Civil Rights Museum.
