The Mid-Morning Dump - 2/22/12

SUPER GINGER SETS A RECORD. Chelsea Poppens went off for 26 and 14, including a school record 25 free throw attempts in a 66-59 OT victory over Missouri.
GOING FOR TWENTY. The men go for win number 20 tonight against a last place Texas Tech team. A win would mean the first 20 win season since the 2003-2004 NIT team (We made the NCAA tourney with 18 wins in 2004-2005), and the first 20 win regular season since the Jamaal Tinsley led 2000-2001 team.
BIG FOUR SERIES? It's looking more and more like we'll have a Big Four Series at Wells Fargo Arena in the near future.
K-STATED AGAIN. After a 78-68 home loss, Missouri has now dropped both games to Kansas State this year, which puts the Wildcats solidly into the NCAA tournament barring a late season slide.
TOURNEY WATCH. This dance card gives Iowa State a 99.75% chance of making the tournament.
THE RETURN OF GREG DAVIS? Iowa beat writer and mustached friend Marc Morehouse seems to think it's a foregone conclusion that the Hawkeyes are indeed bringing in ex-Texas OC Greg Davis to replace Ken O' Keefe. Would a guy with a mustache like that mislead you? I think not..
Start wrapping your heads around Greg Davis.

WARNING: LEGGY FRED HOIBERG PIC WITHIN. Steve Malchow discusses how Fred Hoiberg's experience with 3 very different NBA teams helped prepare him for coaching Iowa State.
BABBTACULAR DEFENSE. Chris Williams talks about the defensive effort Chris Babb has put into shutting down the opposing teams' best perimeter players every night this season.
IT'S THE NEW BUDDY COP SERIES: Lucious and Clyburn, transfers from another mother.
ROYCE VIDEO. White on what people think of him, his son, and his future in basketball... or politics?

BRACKETOLOGY UPDATE. ESPN has Iowa State as a 9 seed against Saint Louis, while SB Nation has ISU as a 9 seed against Vanderbilt.
LOOKS LIKE THAT GREY GOOSE PRESCRIPTION WORKED. Dan McCarney is out of the hospital, still recovering from his stroke.
BARNES/DREW DERP OFF! Scott Drew tried his hardest to blow the game, but smartly wasted all of his timeouts before 2 minutes left so he couldn't screw his team at the end. This led to Rick Barnes' team blowing their halftime lead, and possibly their NCAA tournament hopes.
The Mid-Morning Dump - 2/20/12

OKLAHOMA DOUBLE. The Cyclones registered 11 threes in an 80-69 win in the men's game, while the women followed it up with a 77-71 win over the Sooners. Royce White finishes with a grand total of 7 points in the two victories over Oklahoma, a trend that is proving that the Cyclones are a very well balanced team.
MELVIN APOLOGIZES. Video of Ejim's apology after his ejection for a double forearm screen set on Oklahoma's Carl Blair.
ROYCE = AMAZING. Very well written article about Royce White and his changing goals both on and off the basketball court. If he was ever a "thug", as some had suggested upon his arrival at Iowa State, it's certainly hard to see it now.
BIG 12 TOURNEY BRACKET GENERATOR. Want to see how the Big 12 tournament will play out? Enter your results for the remaining games and get a bracket. Very nicely done.
ANOTHER ARREST. Durrell Givens has been suspended indefinitely from the team after being arrested for possessions of a controlled substance.

DICKIE V DANCING. Just because.
The Mid-Morning Dump - 2/17/12

LET'S PREVIEW OKLAHOMA PART DEUX. Kirk Haaland previews Oklahoma's visit to another Hilton sell out tomorrow at 12:45.
BUBU'S BACK! Palo returns from his broken wrist on Saturday. This is great news for a Cyclone team that always needs more unselfish ball handlers. (giggle)
JUST IN CASE YOU STILL HAVEN'T BOUGHT IN TO FRED HOIBERG YET... I'll go ahead and remind you we have a great recruiting class coming in next year, and Korie Lucious and Will Clyburn will be eligible. The pair have developed a close bond on the court.
WE'RE SMART! Iowa State leads the Big 12 with 4 Academic All-Conference Selections. Melvin Ejim, Scott Christopherson, and Bubu Palo made the first team, while Chris Allen made second team.
BUBBLE WATCHING. SBN's Chris Dobbertean looks at the current bubble teams. Iowa State is wedged in at a 10 seed, #37 overall.
A TRUE SUCCESS STORY. Another Cyclones.com Black History Month article, this time on Ike Harris, who went on to play in the NFL and became the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Inspiring stuff.
ROVELL IS TERRIBLE. Little did you all know, but Darren Rovell's been tweeting his own brand of douchey arrogance for 100 years!
DOES ANYBODY GET RECRUITING RULES? Oregon had to report a minor violation because Mike Belotti mentioned a conversation he had with Chip Kelly on a current Duck, Arik Armstead, while Alabama is free to spam a recruit with 105 letters... on the same day.
The Mid-Morning Dump - 2/16/12

PAUL RHOADS ON TROY DOUGLAS. From the official release: "Troy possesses a dynamic background after years of coaching the secondary at the BCS level," Rhoads said. "His experience recruiting the state of Florida is important to our program. He coached with (Iowa State defensive coordinator) Wally Burnham at South Florida, so he came highly recommended."
CHRIS ALLEN GETS DEEP. CA talks about life before and after Iowa State: "I feel like it’s a learning experience," he said about the last two years of his collegiate career. "I feel like life is going to put a lot of adversity in your way. Either you fold under the adversity or you can build on it. And that’s what I’ve just been trying to do.
THE OTHER THINGS THAT WIN GAMES. Kirk Haaland looks at which players in the Big 12 do "the other things" to make a team successful. Royce White checks in at #4, while Chris Babb and Melvin Ejim both make the Top 25 at #16 and #21, respectively.
DEFENSE WINS GAMES? Iowa State has improved their points allowed average by 14.7 points from last year, 2nd best in Big 12 history.
FIFTH PLACE! Iowa State continued its march up the Big 12 standings, beating Kansas 66-47. The Cyclones are now in a tie with KU for fifth, thanks in part to another double double from Chelsea Poppens, who is garnering some national attention lately.
TCU FALLOUT. After the 4 players were named and Tanner Brock and Devin Johnson were quoted as saying that as many as 82 players had failed a surprise drug test ordered by Gary Patterson, In The Bleachers comments on drug testing and what will probably happen to the 4.
EFFING HAMPTON. They will haunt Jamaal Tinsley's dreams forever, but this dunk is pretty awesome.
The Mid-Morning Dump - 2/15/12

NEW DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH. Football Scoop is reporting that Iowa State has hired former North Carolina DB coach Troy Douglas to assume the same position for the Cyclones. Douglas was the 2009 FootballScoop Co-Defensive Backs Coach of the Year while at UNC and brings 24 years of experience.
WELCOME TO BCS CONFERENCE FOOTBALL! TCU releases statement on 17 students getting arrested for selling drugs, including 4 football players. TCU players arrested in drug raid: Starting SS Devin Johnson, All-Conference DT D.J. Yendrey, potential All-American LB Tanner Brock, and backup OT Ty Horn have all been dismissed.
JUCO STORIES. GoCyclones has a good story on the unconventional (unless you're Bill Snyder) path that Clifford Stokes and TJ Mutcherson took to get to Iowa State.
TROLL ON, CLAY TRAVIS. In his article "The Texas Longhorns Really Are Scared Of The SEC", he manages to troll the entire Big 12. It's quite amazing, really.
MIKE LEACH IN FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. There's ANOTHER movie called Friday Night Lights coming out about Mike Leach. This is all very confusing.
LIN-N-OUT BURGER? I'm sure we're all inundated with Linsanity, but this is a refreshingly honest article by his former Harvard teammate Drew Housman, who reveals his own bitterness about Lin taking over, and his realization about Lin's success today.
NAME THAT CONFERENCE! The Mountain West Conference and Conference USA are merging, but needs a new name.
The Mid-Morning Dump - 2/14/12

BEAR DOWN. Baylor dunked all over Iowa State last night, shooting 60 percent from the field in a 79-64 win. Fred Hoiberg did not mince words, calling the overall effort "pathetic".
FREEDOM! West Virginia and the Big East part ways effective June 30, 2012. The Big 12 will send a 5 million dollar Valentines Day gift and 5 million dollar loan to WVU to help pay for the 20 million dollar buyout with the Big East, clearing the way for the Big 12 schedule to be released at 11 AM today. Maybe.
"NOTHING WRONG WITH ME THAT A LITTLE GREY GOOSE WON'T CURE." - Dan McCarney, after suffering a stroke. Our former coaches just love themselves that booze. Get well soon, Coach Mac.
TROLL FOR HIRE! The NCAA seriously hired an ex-journalist to troll other journalists who write mean things about the NCAA.

The Mid-Morning Dump - 2/13/12

AGGIE TEARS. Texas A&M did their best to replicate a high school team, getting demolished by the Cyclones, 69-46, as the student section trolled away with the help of our friends over at Prevail & Ride. Steve Malchow points out that while Royce and 3 point shooting have been getting much of the credit, defense has been key to ISU's recent success.
CHRIS ALLEN IS THE BIG 12 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK. His monster games against Oklahoma State and Texas A&M made him the 4th Cyclone to be named Big 12 Rookie of the Week this year.
NOT ALL GOES WELL IN TEXAS as the ladies went down to Texas Tech 51-41, helped along by a season-low 27.1 percent shooting performance.
BRACKETOLOGY. Iowa State still rocking a 10 seed in SB Nation's bracketology.
CATCHING UP WITH DEDRIC. Former Cyclone great Dedric Willoughby is back at Iowa State finishing up his degree, and offers some high praise for this year's team: "Individually, this is the most talented team Iowa State has ever put on the basketball court, it’s far more talented than we ever were."
CHECKING IN WITH NIANG. Georges visited with Chris WIlliams of Cyclone Fanatic about this year and the future.
WILL THERE EVER BE A BIG 12 SCHEDULE? First it was Friday, now pushed back to today. I'm just going to assume TCU = A&M and West Virginia = Mizzou and call it good.
BURGASON DISMISSED. Ames native and the nation's leading 3 point shooter Jordan Burgason was kicked out of Lipscomb for "violating team rules". Lipscomb is a highly religious school and rumors are swirling the suspension is very Brandon Davies-esque in nature.
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BREAK CY'S ARM. UConn will be banned from NCAA basketball postseason play in 2013 for a low APR.
MORE AGGIE TEARS. A&M may be less enthusiastic with their move to the SEC as conference rules mandate that they move part of their student section.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL RULES AND PENALTIES CHANGES. Rules changes to do mostly with kickoffs and touchbacks, while the NCAA is also seeking to impose harsher penalties for infractions.
