Countdown to Kickoff: Day 66
One of your intrepid writers gave us this gem this morning. We call it The Dan McCarney Method.
Step 1) Set the tone with an agressive defense that mixed a healthy variety of blitzes into the mix as well as a mix of both man-to-man and zone coverage.
Step 2) Create turnover.
Step 3) Use a dynamic run/pass mix with a lot of play action and option to keep defense off balance and score.
Step 4) Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 until team has 10-20 point lead.
Step 5) Stop blitzing completely, put 8 men in deepish zone coverages (aka "prevent") to avoid long TD passes. Allow opposing offense to dink and dunk.
Step 6) 3 straight run plays, punt.
Step 7) Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until lead is irradicated.
Step 8) Briefly reinstate Step 3 until in field goal position.
Step 9) Miss field goal.
All too true...
Why is this on the list you may ask? Simply put, McCarney may be the winningest coach in program history but the potential he never tapped is overwhelming. He was simultaneously the best and worst fit for ISU. He took the program to new heights but leveled it out with his complaceny. However, watching some of his teams was exciting enough to put this on our list.
