Iowa State Hires Brandon Blaney As Offensive Line Coach

The Cyclones hire an old friend of Mark Mangino's from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to Coaching Search, Iowa State has replaced the departed Chris Klenakis, who took the same position with former employer Bobby Petrino at Louisville, as offensive coordinator with Brandon Blaney, the current defensive quality control assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This move may not make a whole lot of sense from an initial glance, but a look at his career reveals that he took a very similar career path to newly hired offensive coordinator Mark Mangino, also enjoying a stint at Youngstown State, then serving with Mangino both at the University of Oklahoma from 1999-2000, as well as the entire length of Mangino's career at the University of Kansas.

At Kansas, Blaney was the recruiting coordinator as well as tight ends coach, and added the offensive line coach to his title in the later years of his tenure. His reputation is mostly as an outstanding recruiter, responsible for the uptick in recruiting with the Briscoes and Talibs that ended up in Lawrence (and devasted the Cyclones).

Here's an interesting article from KUSports back in 2002 on how hard Blaney worked to get himself the job with the Jayhawks.
