Jeremiah George Drafted by Jets

The former Cyclone linebacker will start his career in New York

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Heading into Saturday of this year's NFL Draft it was easy to see Jeremiah George as a long shot to be drafted.  His size combined with only two years of starting experience made it easy for him to be overlooked and likely to sign a free agent contract on Sunday.  And that type of expectation is exactly why draft prognosticators and fans are watching the draft from their couch and not in NFL front offices.

With the 14th pick in the 5th round (154th overall) the New York Jets made George's dream of reaching the NFL come true.  New York had been focusing primarily on the offensive side of the ball after beginning their draft with Texas Tech TE, and Big XII counterpart, Jace Amaro.  However, Rex Ryan apparently knows a defender when he sees one and now George will be making a return trip to New York but this time in the green and white.  Here's what George had to say after the pick was announced:

George will have tough sledding in New York with their 3-4 scheme featuring inside linebackers DeMario Davis and David Harris prominently, but George has a knack for being a big contributor on special teams and one has to think he can make an impact there from day one.

Ryan is big on disguising packages and using speed in his pass rushes, so it's entirely possible George sees some action in 2014 as a 3rd down pass rush specialist given his speed.  We'll have more on Monday about the skill set that George brings to New York and what fans can expect this fall.

Let's wish Jeremiah the best as he starts his NFL journey with the Jets!
