Big 12 Week 5 Recap: Even More Ref Shenanagins

New, 12 comments

Texas got paddled in Ft. Worth and Texas Tech was not quite ready for prime time in Arlington as October ushered in the first full week of Big 12 action.

Week 5 Results

Kansas Jayhawks 13 - Iowa State Cyclones 38

Despite a slow start on offense, which included a missed field goal on the opening drive, Iowa State was firmly in control of this game behind strong performances from freshman running back, Mike Warren (176 yds, 2 TD's) and the Cyclone defense (284 total yards).

Sam B. Richardson threw for two touchdowns and ran for one more as he guided his team to their second victory on the year.

(23) West Virginia 24 - (15) Oklahoma Sooners 44

Oklahoma's recently maligned defense held Skyler Howard to just 173 yards and forced 3 interceptions as the Sooner's dominated West Virginia in Norman on Saturday. The Mountaineer's defense, which came into the contest as the nation's top-ranked scoring defense, allowed 44 points for the home team, almost double what they had allowed all season to date.

Baker Mayfield continued to impress with 320 yards on 14/25 passing and 3 touchdowns. Samaje Perine had 65 yards on 16 carries.

Texas Longhorns 7 - (4) TCU Horned Frogs 50

TCU scored 30 points in the opening quarter as Trevone Boykin improved on his Heisman candidacy resume with 332 yards passing and 5 touchdowns. The Texas offense could get nothing going and finished with just 313 yards of total offense.

Whether fair or not, Charlie's seat is warming up very quickly in Austin as the Longhorns maintain the last place in conference standings for the second week in a row.

Texas Tech Red Raiders 35 - (5) Baylor Bears 63

So much offense. The two teams combined for 1316 yards in Arlington.

So many scores. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, most of it came when Baylor had the ball.

Baylor's juggernaut was fueled by junior running back, Shock Linwood, who ran his way to a career best 221 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 carries. Texas Tech was flagged 17 times for 142 penalty yards, preventing them from fully capitalizing on 636 yards of offense.

Kansas State Wildcats 34 - (20) Oklahoma State Cowboys 36

Oklahoma State won their fifth game of the season behind 437 passing yards from sophomore quarterback, Mason Rudolph, and more questionable officiating from Big 12 officials - specifically a first half phantom first down. Kansas State fans, who willfully participated in the Texas tease last week, were less jovial about when the incompetence affected their season and lent their voices to the Longhorns' internet outrage.

Still, allowing 9-15 third down conversions and 481 yards of offense will lose you more games than it will win.
