Poor shooting plagued the Cyclones all afternoon.

Less than 48 hours after defeating Hampton, Iowa State fell on Sunday afternoon in a 70-74 loss to Drake at the Knapp Center in Des Moines. Iowa State had not lost to Drake since 2009. Jadda Buckley led the way for the Cyclones with 18 points. Seanna Johnson finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start and led by as much as seven points in the 1st quarter before the Cyclones clawed back to lead by one at the end of the first 10 minutes. Drake used a 12-point run to extend its lead to double digits midway through the 2nd quarter, but Iowa State once again trimmed the deficit and was down just one point at the halftime break.

Drake, picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley, led most of the first half thanks to 10 turnovers and poor rebounding by the Cyclones. Iowa State limited its turnovers in the 3rd quarter, but the Bulldogs continued to keep the Cyclones at bay with eight points in the 3rd from Lizzy Wendell, the Missouri Valley preseason player of the year.

Iowa State got as close as five points midway through the 4th quarter and had numerous chances to cut into Drake's lead, but the Cyclones were held scoreless for nearly five minutes of the final period. With 1:24 to play, Seanna Johnson hit two free throws to cut Drake's lead to three points. Iowa State could not covert on a chance to tie the game with under a minute to play, and Drake closed out the game at the free throw line.

Iowa State returns to Hilton Coliseum next Sunday at 2pm to take on New Orleans.
