On This Day in Sports History

DECEMBER 31, 1972. A plane carrying Pirates Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente crashes shortly after takeoff in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The plane was chartered by Clemente to deliver food and relief supplies to survivors of a recent earthquake in Nicaragua. He and five others were killed, and his body was never recovered.
