The Cyclones enter the tourney on a hot streak, winning their last five games. The last three games of that streak came against Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas on the way to Iowa State's second consecutive Big 12 Tournament championship. ISU overcame double-digit deficits in all five games of the streak, showing brilliant resiliency that could translate into a deep tourney run.
Meanwhile, UAB had to fight to earn their tourney berth, rattling off three straight wins in the Conference USA Tournament to grab the tournament champion's automatic bid. The Blazers took out Western Kentucky, Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee in the C-USA Tournament and enter the matchup against ISU holding a 19-15 overall record. UAB's 15 losses are the most of any team in the tournament that didn't have to play in the "First Four" games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Remember that one time when Iowa State lost to H******? That ain't gonna happen today.
UAB is a very young team and has losses to the likes of South Florida (9-23) and Rice (12-20) earlier this year. Cyclone fans would be the first to point out that teams can improve as the year goes on, seeing as how we lost to South Carolina (17-16) and Texas Tech (13-19) a couple months ago. However, both of the teams that handed ISU their worst losses would run circles around UAB's.
While the Blazers have played a vastly inferior conference schedule, they've also played their fair share of talented teams in the non-con. Tournament teams on UAB's regular season schedule from earlier in the year include 1-seed Wisconsin, 11-seed UCLA, 9-seed LSU and 4-seed North Carolina. The Blazers lost all of those games by an average of 20.25 points.
Basically, Iowa State should cruise in this one. UAB might be able to score on occasion, but they'll probably have trouble containing the Cyclone offense. An ideal situation for ISU would be to get up big early to allow the rotation players to get some rest during the second half.
Here's to an Iowa State victory that doesn't involve a minor heart attack like the last five wins...
