Coach Steve Prohm's quest for a second point guard in the 2016 class will continue as the highly touted prospect out of Lima, OH, shocked the country and chose the Wolverines this afternoon.
Rated the 69th best prospect overall and 13th best point guard in the 2016 class by 247Sports, Simpson was recently offered by Wisconsin and Illinois after his visit to Iowa State the weekend of August 8th. News broke just today that the PG was strongly considering Michigan, which wasn't originally listed in his final four schools. When decision time came, it was Jon Beilein and Big Blue.
What does this mean for Iowa State?
Xavier's commitment means Iowa State will likely focus on JUCO PG Darrion Strong out of Coffeyville Community College, who is on campus this weekend along with power forward targets Romello White and Eric Curry. While having two JUCO point guards may not be the ideal situation, it does solidify the point guard position for the near future while Iowa State plays the waiting game in regards to Monte Morris' future.
While the more pressing need may be restocking Iowa State's front court after the 2015 season, there are a couple other guard names to watch out for. 6'4" SG Jakolby Long is slated for an official visit to Iowa State on October 3rd, and Zach Norvell, a Top 100 guard out of Chicago, is reportedly hosting some Iowa State representatives as the fall recruiting period opens up.
