The Week That Was:
Monday, January 4th
#17 West Virginia Mountaineers 95 - TCU Horned Frogs 87
Not sure why this was a Big Monday matchup.
#2 Oklahoma Sooners 106 - #1 Kansas Jayhawks 109 (3 OT)
If you like college basketball and didn't watch this game, kick yourself.
Tuesday, January 5th
Kansas State Wildcats 57 - Texas Longhorns 60
Apparently, a B1G game broke out in Austin. Blech.
Oklahoma State Cowboys 62 - Baylor Bears 79
OSU might have been decent this year with a healthy Phil Forte. Without him they will need to get used to outcomes like this...
Wednesday, January 6th
Texas Tech Red Raiders 69 - #13 Iowa State Cyclones 76
In a game that was closer than many cared to sit through, #13 Iowa State staved off a pesky Tech team to stay unbeaten in Ames and 1-1 in conference play.
Saturday, January 9th
Oklahoma State 60 - #17 West Virginia 77
...And this.
Baylor 94 - #13 Iowa State 89
Blech.
Kansas State 76 - #2 Oklahoma 86
Maybe K-State is exactly the team we were all expecting them to be?
Texas 57 - TCU 58
Blech.
#1 Kansas 69 - Texas Tech 59
It was another valiant effort from Tubby's Tortilla Tossers, but still another loss for Tech.
Player of the Week - Buddy Hield, Oklahoma
Not sure I need to give much explanation anytime the senior guard's name is announced for the Big 12 Player of the Week this year. Dude is good.
Newcomer of the Week - Barry Brown, Kansas State
The freshman bench player led the Wildcats in scoring in their games at Texas and Oklahoma, averaging 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals during the week.
The Week That Is:
Tuesday, January 12th
(1)Kansas @ (11)West Virginia, 6:00 PM on ESPN2
Another tough road test for the top ranked Jayhawks.
Texas Tech @ Kansas State, 7:00 PM on ESPN3
One would think an improved Texas Tech team can win in Bramlage Coliseum.
(17)Iowa State @ Texas, 8:00 PM on ESPN2
Texas may still be searching for their identity, but possibly so are the Cyclones. Both teams could use this win.
Wednesday, January 13th
TCU @ (22)Baylor, 7:15 PM on ESPNews
Not sure this game is news worthy.
(2) Oklahoma @ Oklahoma State, 8:00 PM on ESPNU
Forte is gone, as is most of Cowboy Nation's hope of anything exciting happening this season short of a coaching change.
Saturday, January 16th
TCU @ (1) Kansas, 1:00 PM on ESPNews
A nice breather for Kansas.
(22)Baylor @ Texas Tech, 2:00 PM
Let's go Tech!
(11) West Virginia @ (2) Oklahoma, 3:00 PM on ESPN2
The second of two tough games for West Virginia could be its toughest.
(17) Iowa State @ Kansas State, 3:00 PM on ESPNU
Hopefully ends in a two game road winning streak for Iowa State.
Oklahoma State @ Texas, 5:00 PM on ESPN2
Meh.
Predictions:
Games of the Week
KU @ WVU
WVU @ OU
Both games have conference championship implications for each team involved.
Conference Standings
Movin on Up
West Virginia - Bobby Huggins' team continue to impress even if they have yet to play anyone but the bottom three teams in conference play. Their next two games are brutal, however, and will determine how good this Mountaineer team truly is.
Not Looking Good
Iowa State - I'm far from the "Burn-Everything" bandwagon, but the loss to Baylor in Ames doesn't do much for the team's chances at dethroning the Jayhawks this season. There are still plenty of games to be played and technically the Cyclones still control their own destiny in their quest for their first conference title since 2001.
