Bouncing Around the Big 12: Biggest Monday Edition

The nation's top two teams face off in Lawrence, Kansas tonight. We highlight everything else going on in the Big 12 conference last week and this week as well.

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Tonight's Big Monday matchup between Kansas and Oklahoma will officially be a contest of the nation's top two teams and should be another great game, following the Sooners' close win in Norman over Iowa State on Saturday.

The Week That Was:

Monday, December 28th

Delaware State 47 - TCU 75

Delaware State was 0-13 after this game, so I'm not sure this counts as a quality non-conference win for the Horned Frogs.

Tuesday, December 29th

Texas Southern 59 - #23 Baylor 72

Baylor would enter conference play with a 10-2 record and Top 25 ranking.

Richmond 70 - Texas Tech 85

The Red Raiders lost only one non-conference game and should be a dangerous opponent in Big 12 games.

UMKC 43 - Oklahoma State 61

A win is a win for the Cowboys this year

Saint Louis 47 - Kansas State 75

Damn it, K-State, couldn't you take a year off?

UC Irvine 53 - #2 Kansas 78

Kansas is playing great basketball entering conference play.

Connecticut 71 - Texas 66

Probably not the way the Longhorns wanted to enter the new year.

Wednesday, December 30th

#19 West Virginia 88 - Virginia Tech 63

The first true road game for the Mountaineers proved no challenge, as West Virginia was never really threatened in this one.

Coppin State 84 - #11 Iowa State 104

Some aren't happy with a 20 point victory. Looked good to me.

Saturday, January 2nd

#19 West Virginia 87 - Kansas State 83 (2OT)

West Virginia racked up another impressive road win, this time against a pesky Wildcat team in Manhattan, which is never an easy place to win.

Texas 74 - Texas Tech 82

Playing in Lubbock will not be fun this year.

TCU 48 - Oklahoma State 69

A matchup of the league's bottom two teams was probably as boring as the final score indicates. I didn't watch, so cannot confirm.

#23 Baylor 74 - #2 Kansas 102

What happens when you play nobody during non-conference games and then face one of the top two teams in the nation on their home court? This, apparently.

#11 Iowa State 83 - #3 Oklahoma 87

Other than the ultimate outcome, this game did not disappoint those who enjoy college basketball in its finest form.

Player of the Week -  Jaysean Paige, West Virginia

The Mountaineer senior guard averaged 21.0 points and 6.0 rebounds, helping #19 West Virginia secure two victories - including an impressive double overtime win in Manhattan.

Newcomer of the Week - Deonte Burton, Iowa State

Probably no surprise to Cyclone fans who have been nothing but impressed so far with the 6-4 transfer who scored 19 points against Oklahoma. The junior guard shot 72.2 percent (13-18) from the field over both games last week, including 5-6 from 3-point range.

The Week That Is:

Monday, January 4th

#17 West Virginia Mountaineers @ TCU Horned Frogs - 6:00 PM on ESPN2

Third road game in a row for West Virginia should be its easiest.

#2 Oklahoma Sooners @ #1 Kansas Jayhawks - 8:00 PM on ESPN

If you're reading this article, then there is a good chance I don't need to explain how good this Big Monday matchup should be.

Tuesday, January 5th

Oklahoma State Cowboys @ Baylor Bears - 7:00 PM on ESPN2

This game should help Baylor get back into the winning ways.

Kansas State Wildcats @ Texas Longhorns - 7:00 PM no TV

Time to see how good both teams could be.

Wednesday, January 6th

Texas Tech Red Raiders @ #13 Iowa State Cyclones - 8:00 PM on ESPNU

Also time to see how good Texas Tech really is. This should be a good contest for both teams. I mean, I hope not, but this won't be a guaranteed win for Iowa State.

Saturday, January 9th

Oklahoma State @ #17 West Virginia - 12:00 PM on ESPNU

Back home against a struggling Cowboys team sets West Virginia up to start the season 3-0.

#23 Baylor @ #13 Iowa State - 2:00 PM on ESPN2

I'm hoping for a similar experience for the Bears as they had in Phog Allen Fieldhouse last weekend.

Kansas State @ #2 Oklahoma - 3:30 PM on ESPN News

Rough one for the Wildcats and not an easy one, necessarily, for Oklahoma.

Texas @ TCU - 6:00 PM on ESPNU

I haven't seen either team play yet, so I'll reserve judgement till this segment next week.

#1 Kansas @ Texas Tech - 8:00 PM

It'll be interesting to see just how tough Lubbock will be this season, and this will set the bar for all games to follow here.

Game(s) of the Week

Pretty easy choice for the top game of the week as #2 Oklahoma travels to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the top ranked Jayhawks in what is probably the top Big Monday game in some time.
