2010: The Last Time Iowa Beat ISU in Kinnick Stadium

Take a look at all the notable events that also took place way back in 2010!

NCAA Football: Iowa State at Iowa
Iowa has had trouble beating Iowa State in “historic” Kinnick Stadium lately.

Okay, so Iowa State football played like a big pile of doggy doo doo against UNI. However, just two years ago, Iowa State also lost to a FCS team in North Dakota State, and guess what happened a couple weeks later?

You guessed it... ISU went into the confines of “historic” Kinnick Stadium and did a good thing.

So, who’s to say the same thing won’t happen again this year? Sure, Iowa is favored by 18 points according to Vegas... Sure, Iowa is admittedly a much better team than they were in 2014... But, as we often see in rivalries, anything can happen. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

That win in 2014 was exciting, and gave Iowa State its second consecutive win in Kinnick. Back in 2012, Hawkeye slayer Steele Jantz led the Cyclones to an ugly 9-6 win, sealed by a Jake Knott interception on the last Iowa drive of the day. That interception led to one of my all-time favorite pictures:

Jake Knott, taking everyone’s breath away.

With ISU wins in 2012 and 2014, you have to go ALL THE WAY BACK TO 2010 to get to the last time Iowa beat Iowa State in Iowa City. For some context, between then and now, I started at and graduated from Iowa State University... And had an entire year of full-time employment.

That’s a long time. To give you some more indicators of just how long it’s been since the Hawkeyes beat the Cyclones in Kinnick Stadium, let’s take a look at some notable events that occurred back in 2010.

Apple Released the Original iPad

Tablets have been around seemingly forever. In fact, many of you have probably watched Iowa State beat Iowa on an iPad!

Obamacare Passed Into Law

The healthcare system of the United States was completely re-shaped the same year Iowa last beat ISU in Kinnick.

LeBron James Made “The Decision”

James went to Miami, won a couple championships, came back to Cleveland, and won another championship since Iowa last beat ISU in Kinnick.

Justin Bieber Released His First Full-Length Studio Album

My World 2.0 featured the hit song Baby, which also happens to be what the typical Hawk fan acts like after Iowa State beats Iowa.

Fred Hoiberg Hired by Iowa State

As of the 2010 football game, he had yet to coach his first basketball game in Ames. He had fun beating Iowa as well, going 4-1 against the Hawks during his time at ISU.

Armando Galarraga Robbed of a Perfect Game

Umpire Jim Joyce admittedly made the wrong call and robbed the Detroit Tigers pitcher of baseball’s elusive perfect game. The MLB has since implemented a replay system to challenge calls such as these.

Notice how the look on Galarraga’s face after the call looks so similar to the faces in the Jake Knott interception picture above?

LOST Aired Its Final Episode

“Lost” is also a term often used to describe how Iowa’s defense looked in the 2016 Rose Bowl.

Iowa Football Won Its Last Bowl Game

The 2010 Insight Bowl was the last time Iowa won a bowl game. For as terrible as ISU football has been, just one year prior, Paul Rhoads won the same bowl game in his first season at Iowa State.
