Which Kansas is better? The Rock Band or the Football Team

Tempting fate after beating Oklahoma

Our neighbors to the Southwest visit Ames this weekend. In honor of this occasion I present this totally and unequivocally objective piece...

Now this concept may seem odd, sure, but I intend to fully give the Kansas football team as much respect as they deserve. For the sake of simplicity, I chose a few different categories and assigned a winner to each. Whoever walked away with more categories won the title of “Best” Kansas.

Fan Support

If this article talked about the KU basketball team, my guess is the outcome of this category would be much different. But this is football, and I can tell you very honestly that I don’t know many Kansas football fans. On the other hand, I know a ton of people who love the band Kansas. Will Ferrell loves the band Kansas (You’re my boy, Blue!), and I certainly haven’t heard him talk about the Kansas football team. The band Kansas also has had many different albums go gold AND platinum, which I know for a fact the Kansas football team has never done. That sounds to me like a lot of people like the band more than the football team.

On the other hand, my guess is that David Beaty’s mom cheers for the football team which leads me to believe the football team has exactly one fan.

EDGE: The band

Kansas the football team hasn’t had a winning season since 2008. They’ve won a total of 5 games over the last 3 years and have had 5 different coaches in the last 7 seasons. The band Kansas, on the other hand, hasn’t had a losing season EVER and they’ve been in existence since 1973! That model of consistency is something even Nick Saban hasn’t been able to replicate.

Check and mate.

Field Storms against Rhode Island

The football team, after going 0-12 in 2015, played Rhode Island in early September 2016. Kansas won, and in the ensuing madness that comes with a Jayhawk victory the students rushed the field. Now, for some reason this whole “rushing the field after beating a bad team” thing sounds awfully familiar... Oh well.

I know for a fact that the band has never rushed the field against Rhode Island so...

Edge: The football team

So who is the better Kansas? Who has the edge, the football team or the band?

The winner?
