The Cyclones let the special teams take the reigns in a 45-0 win against the Jayhawks

Cyclone fans were anxious to see how their team would respond after a program-changing win, and were fearful of a hangover.

Saturday morning’s forecast had people worried as well.

Those of us who tailgated surely weren’t going to let the weather stop us, however.

The game was delayed for a half-hour due to lightning.

Actually, waiting under the concourse for the delay to stop looked something like this:

Those who were actually in the stands didn’t care, however. They had come to see the Cyclones destroy the Jayhawks.

Iowa State’s opening drive ended in a punt, which Steven Sims Jr. fumbled and Iowa State recovered. After the Cyclones punted, KU immediately threw a pick which lead to a Montgomery touchdown.

After trading punts, Trever Ryen returned a punt 68 yards to the end zone, giving the Cyclones a 14-0 lead. That De’monte Ruth block deserves another look.

Speaking of Trever Ryen, the guy was everywhere. He was incredible on punt coverage, streaking down the field to pin the Jayhawks deep.

The rest of the half was rather messy - one missed and one made field goal, and a turnover on downs that would lead to another Montgomery touchdown.

With less than ideal field conditions, Iowa State tried to keep things simple and focus on the ground game, though even that wasn’t easy.

The second half featured Kansas constantly being pinned deep, a plethora of punts (including a punted blocked by Iowa State), and not a whole lot of offense.

The offense did tack on 3 more touchdowns, and the reserves got plenty of action.

In all, as if the rain wasn’t enough, the Cyclones really poured it on the Jayhawks in all facets of the game, winning 45-0.
