Following a tweet by ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit regarding the future of Matt Campbell, many speculated the 37 year old coaching prodigy would be leaving for greener pastures, essentially referring to Iowa State as a “stepping stone” program. Such speculation proved to be true, but the greener pastures are not in Knoxville, Lincoln, or College Station.
Travis Hines of the Ames Tribune has confirmed through near triple digit anonymous sources that Matt Campbell will be leaving Ames following the 2017 football season to claim the throne atop Mt. Olympus as the lord of the sky and supreme ruler of the Olympians.
As he did after moving from Toledo to Ames, Campbell is expected to bring along most of his coaching staff to replace the existing Olympians. Tom Manning is expected to assume the role of god of the seas and right hand man to the ruler, formerly occupied by Poseidon. John Heacock is expected to assume Apollo’s role of god of the sun, prophecy, philosophy, truth, inspiration, poetry, music, arts, medicine, healing and plaque. Regarding Heacock’s appointment. Campbell cited his ability to be multiple and versatile.
“I really think this role will allow John to be successful due to his ability to be multiple in governance, which you have to be to cover all the random shit Apollo was in charge of.”
Other possible nominations include tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Alex Golesh as the successor to Hermes, and, following graduation, Sam Seonbuchner will assume Aphrodite’s role as god/goddess of love and desire. When asked about how Seonbuchner can fill this role, Campbell simply held up this picture:
