That excitement got ratcheted up about 10 notches when Iowa State scored on the game’s opening drive. Minutes later, David Montgomery would do David Montgomery things, putting the Cyclones up 14-0 thanks to an unbelievable run. The Cowboys would respond and respond quickly, as within 7 minutes, the game was tied. All of a sudden, the Cowboys had scored 21 unanswered points and taken the lead. This change of events was thanks in part to special teams play, including Colin Downing, whose day looked something like this: Iowa State would respond just before the half, aided by a horse-collar tackle, as LANRAM moved a massive pile-up into the endzone for 6. Oklahoma State would open the second half with a field goal, but the Zeb Noland-led Cyclones would take the lead on a David Montgomery touchdown. Oklahoma State would re-take the lead after a 2 play drive... ... But thankfully, Joel Lanning stepped in to save the day once again, and Allen Lazard made an absurdly difficult touchdown grab. After an Oklahoma State field goal, Noland would again march the Cyclones down the field, and ISU would go up 42-34 on a Montgomery touchdown. And then, just like that, the fun stopped. Oklahoma State scored back to back touchdowns, got a 2-point conversion, and the ISU offense went nowhere. A final drive gave Iowa State fans hope once more, as the Cyclones got within the 5 yard line with less than a minute to go... Until the Big 12 refs stepped in, calling a close play in the endzone an OSU interception instead of a Marchie Murdock touchdown. The officials can never just let Iowa State fans be happy. And seeing different angles of the replay on Twitter after the game sure didn’t help one bit. Whether one blames missed opportunities, a poor defensive effort, or a missed call, the final outcome is a bitter pill to swallow.
