Betting the Big 12: Week 2

LIBERTY and justice for all!

I went 8-2 last week, and that’s all about to go downhill, probably.

South Alabama has only been playing college football since 2009, under the direction of Joey Jones, and has a 48-43 record since then. Last week, the Cowboys disposed of Tulsa quite easily, allowing only 24 points (just like I said!) and scoring 59.

South Alabama is good but not great, see to it that Oklahoma State wins.

Iowa @ Iowa State | September 9th, 11AM - ESPN2 | Line: -1.5 Iowa

Iowa State put away Northern Iowa in their previous game, 42-24. The other team beat Wyoming 24-3. While Iowa State needs to stop the running attack featuring a good back in Akrum Wadley, the Cyclones have their own good back in David Montgomery. The real game changer will be how ISU’s offensive line stacks up to Iowa’s defense.

AHF > ANF and that’s just common knowledge, so, prediction time.

Fun fact: Iowa is known to copy the Cyclones, but did you know they even copied Iowa State’s lead by putting numbers on jerseys? According to, “The sports editor of The Des Moines Register convinces the head coaches at Iowa State and Drake to wear numbers on their team's uniforms for the upcoming Cyclone-Bulldog showdown in Des Moines.” Another part of that article speaks to the time in history, “Results are flown back to Ames by carrier pigeon.” We won, 16-0, by the way. Also, it is confirmed that we wore cardinal for that game.

West Virginia is coming off a loss to Virginia Tech, while East Carolina is looking to get their first win of the season after previously losing to (FCS) James Madison 34-14. West Virginia leads the all time series 18-3. They’ll get win 19 on Saturday.

Charlotte @ #19 Kansas State | September 9th, 11AM - FSN | Line: -36 KSU

The 49ers stopped fielding teams in 1948, back when Bill Snyder was still a teenager. However, in 2013, the team restarted in the FCS and in 2015 they made the leap to the FBS, playing in Conference-USA ball.

I’m giving the edge to the team (and coach) that’s been around longer than their opponent.

#22 TCU @ Arkansas | September 9th, 2:30PM - CBS | Line: -3 TCU

TCU, with quarterback Kenny Hill, are out for revenge from last year’s disappointing game against the Hogs. The Razorbacks have former Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads as defensive coordinator, so that’s something to consider.

San José State @ Texas | September 9th, 2:30PM - LHN | Line: -26 Texas

Texas scored 20 points in a quarter and allowed over 50 points in a loss. I love Tom Herman, but this is kinda funny. San José State in their season opener played Part 1 of the Charlie Strong Bowl, but the wheels fell off that wagon after the first quarter.

Central Michigan @ Kansas | September 9th, 3PM - FSN | Line: -6 Kansas

These two teams met last in 2014, and I really hope Kansas will stop all of their 2014 ways, like now.

#5 Oklahoma @ #2 Ohio State | September 9th, 6:30PM - ABC | Line: -7.5 Ohio State

This should be exciting, hopefully more so than last year’s 45-21 victory by the Buckeyes. Baker Mayfield vs. J.T. Barrett should be a good show.

UTSA @ Baylor | September 9th, 7PM - FSN | Line: -17 Baylor

Baylor lost last week, that’s pretty neat. Why not predict the same result this week?
