Basketball Preview: We’re Talking Texas Pt. 2

A win in Austin could go a long ways.

Last Time Out

Iowa State was coming off one of their worst performances of the season at TCU. The nation’s 8th ranked team was coming into Ames on Saturday. Prohm had the guys ready, and Iowa State was able to pull off the upset of Texas Tech. Cam Lard led the way for Iowa State with a game high 18 points, as he continued to be a presence around the rim with three blocks on the afternoon. Iowa State shot over 45% from the field, and things went just as planned in Hilton Coliseum.

About Texas

Since the last time Iowa State and Texas tangled in Ames, the Longhorns have gone through a whirlwind of emotions. Teammate Andrew Jones was diagnosed with Leukemia, and has already began receiving treatment.

Texas has gone 2-3 since their trip to Ames. Wins over TCU and Texas Tech have helped them keep some momentum. Their most recent game was a dismantling in Morgantown, as WVU took down the Longhorns 86-51.

Dylan Osetkowski, who lit up the Cyclones in Ames for 25 points, is Texas’ leading scorer. He averages over 14 points a game. Big time freshman Mo Bamba averages 11 points a game, as well as 4 blocks per contest.

Players To Watch

The previously mentioned duo of Osetkowski and Bamba will be the ones to watch. If Iowa State can find ways to limit Osetkowski on the offensive end, Texas has limited options other Bamba with Andrew Jones out of the lineup. The Cyclones showed they can play with the Longhorns already, it will be the effort that will have to come on the road.

What To Expect

This is certainly one that Iowa State needs if they want to push themselves into the conversation for the bubble watch. Iowa State has proven they can play well on the road in tough environments. Example A: at Kansas a few weeks ago. They have also shown us they have the ability to lay a dud on the road. Example B: TCU last week.

Iowa State is going to have to limit the damage done from behind the three point line, while battling inside to limit Bamba’s opportunities. Iowa State has been horrid on defense at times, and now is the time to start to limit that.

What I have seen from the Cyclone basketball team all year is inconsistency. They have shown they can play with the best, but also play like the worst. I am not confident in this game partly because it is on the road.
