Chapter 12 of the Riot Bowl takes place at Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday night

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky at West Virginia Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

Last Time Out

Iowa State had one of their worst performances of the season on Saturday against Tennessee. No one played a good game for the Cyclones, and on top of it, they lost Nick Weiler-Babb for at least two games.

Tennessee shut down the Cyclones offensively and held them to 45 points. The Volunteers also drained 12 three pointers en route to a 68-45 victory.

About West Virginia

Press Virginia is still effective. This style had them ranked all the way at #2 in the country at one point. The Mountaineers are currently ranked 15th after a bit of skid and a loss at home to Kentucky, where they held a 17 point lead in the second half. They sit in a three way tie for second in the Big 12. West Virginia holds a win over Virginia, which remains Virginia’s only defeat of the season.

West Virginia ranks 14th in adjusted defensive efficiency and 33rd in offensive efficiency according to KenPom.com. The Mountaineers suffocating defense (and press) causes 18.95 turnovers per game, which puts them 3rd nationally. The Mountaineers turn these turnovers into easy transition baskets. Transition defense has been a weakness for Iowa State this year, so this could get interesting.

West Virginia is also a problem on the offensive glass, they rank second nationally with 14.7 offensive boards per game. Iowa State will need to out-tough one of the toughest teams in the country if they want to compete in this game.

Players to Watch

Jevon Carter is the alpha dog of this team. The 6’2 senior point guard leads the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game. Carter also sets the tone defensively on the perimeter, averaging 3.3 steals per game, placing him second in all of basketball this season. To go along with scoring, Carter is the main facilitator and leads the team in assists with 6.5 dimes a game.

What to Expect

This is not a favorable matchup for Iowa State, because they are a team that struggles to inbound the ball on simple out of bounds plays. West Virginia specializes in this type of style. It also is concerning how much the Cyclones have struggled at the line this year, considering how often the Mountaineers send opponents to the line.

West Virginia will send a lot of different looks on offense and defense and give the young Iowa State team fits. Hopefully, the Cyclones can give us one of their ice hot shooting nights and pull an upset, but that seems unlikely.

With Nick Weiler-Babb, I don’t like Iowa State’s chances in this game, but without Weiler-Babb? This could be a very ugly game for the Cyclones
