Last Time Out
Iowa State fell to 0-2 in Big 12 play on Monday after falling to Texas 74-70 in overtime in Hilton. The young Cyclones are left searching for answers and battling inconsistencies all over the floor. Iowa State did have a lead in the second half of that game, only to watch it fade away.
We can only hope this team is still learning to grow and can overcome the issues that are plaguing them early on.
About Oklahoma State
Hey look, someone else is 0-2 to start conference play. The Cowboys lost their conference opener to West Virginia and followed that with a blowout loss to Oklahoma. Mike Boyton has his hands full as well after taking over for Brad Underwood, who bolted to Illinois after only one year in Stillwater.
The Cowboys are averaging just a hair above 80 points per game, and are led by Jeffrey Carroll whom the Cyclones are very familiar with already. They also allow just a tick over 70 points per game, which ranks 129th in the country.
Recently, Iowa State has been getting torched from behind the arc, as well as two point jump shots. Oklahoma State is averaging just .87 points per possession and shooting around 30% from the 3pt arc. Today may be the day from Steve Prohm to figure out some things defensively.
With Oklahoma State not presenting any real challenge height wise, Iowa State will need to attack the basketball and create opportunities within in the paint, as well as kickouts to three point shooters.
Players To Watch
Jeffrey Carroll. The senior guard is averaging 15 points per game and shooting around 30% from 3. He is the motor that allows then Cowboys to go. If Iowa State can limit his opportunities, they certainly will increase their chances on the road.
Kendall Smith. The Cowboys third leading score as well as the Oklahoma State leading assist man. Another one to limit opportunities and keep from making plays for his teammates.
What To Expect
Hell, the way this season has gone, anything is about to happen.
This Cyclone team has been very unpredictable. Early on in the year they grew as a team and were hitting a stride. To start Big 12 play, it appears they’ve fallen back into some old habits that plagued them early on in the season.
This Cowboy team presents Iowa State with an opportunity to steal one on the road. It will be up to them to take it. Lindell Wigginton and Donovan Jackson are going to have to both score in the same game. If either one struggles, it may be a long day offensively for Iowa State. Cameron Lard will have to continue his hot play as well. If he does that, there is no reason this team can’t get better as conference play moves on down the line.
I see these teams still searching for their identity. Both have their struggles, and both need a win. Iowa State will want it more, and Lindell Wigginton will close it out in the end. Expect another close one down in Stillwater.
