Times are good in Cyclone Nation after an undefeated October. The Big 12 Championship game is within reach. But a few things still need to break the Cyclone’s way to get there. This is your guide for rooting interest this weekend. For more information on tiebreaking scenarios, check out the Big 12’s website. Seriously, the worst-case option is to just draw names. Can you imagine the conspiracies if that were to happen? Think about Bob Bowlsby, former UNI and TOE athletic director, in a drawing with Iowa State involved...
#13 West Virginia (6-1, 4-1) at #17 Texas (6-2, 4-1) | 2:30pm, FOX
The best possible outcome is a WWE-style wrestling match with Dana Holgorsen and Tom Herman that gets both teams disqualified. Honestly, you can’t rule this out completely, but just in case the game happens, Iowa State needs another West Virginia loss. With Texas being a future opponent, we can afford to see them keep winning, for now. There’s no joy in this, but cheer for the Longhorns to defend the home turf.
#7 Oklahoma (7-1, 4-1) at Texas Tech (5-3, 3-2) | 7:00pm, ABC
As tempting as it would be to cheer for an Oklahoma loss, that brings with it more chaos and more tiebreaker scenarios. The smoothest path for an Iowa State championship game appearance is for Oklahoma to be the regular season champion with 1 loss. The Cyclones would need to finish tied for 2nd with a head-to-head advantage against everyone else. Cheer for the Oklahoma to deliver a knockout punch to Coach Kliff.
Sam Houston State (5-3, 4-2 Southland) at Incarnate Word (4-4, 4-2 Southland) | 2:00pm, ESPN3
Just for good measure, UIW is 1 game behind in the Southland Conference race with 3 weeks to go. In order to protect the potential December 1st game, cheer for the Bearkats to score the big road win, and keep Incarnate Word out of the FCS playoffs.
