The Cyclones returned home from a successful Maui trip and now are in the comfort of their own home. Iowa State plays host to Nebraska-Omaha tonight.
Last Time Out
Iowa State was in Maui last week, leaving with a 2-1 record. Their last game was a victory over San Diego State by a score 87-57. The Cyclones were hot from the floor and seemingly could not miss the entire afternoon.
The Cyclones dominated the first half, and in the second half Iowa State continued to open up and maintain its lead through strong rebounding and transition scoring, with the Cyclones out rebounding the Aztecs 41 to 27, and outscoring them in transition 28 to 6.
Marial Shayok led the way for the Cyclones with 21 points, including 4-6 from three point range. Michael Jacobson added 19 points and Terrance Lewis out of nowhere played his best game in a Cyclone uniform scoring 16 points.
About Nebraska-Omaha
Nebraska-Omaha won their 2nd straight game and improved to 3-3 on the season after defeating the Montana State Bobcats 89-65 this past Saturday. Nebraska-Omaha had no trouble putting up points against the struggling Montana State defense. Nebraska-Omaha shot 57.9% from the field and 48.3% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Mavericks was Zach Jackson who had 33 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal.
On the season, the Mavericks are averaging 79.3 ppg on 48.3% shooting from the field. They also are averaging 8 three-pointers per game on 35.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Defensively, Omaha is allowing their opponents to average 73.0 points per game on 46.6% shooting from the field. They currently rank just 255th in rebound margin and 301st in defensive FG%.
Opponent Player To Watch
Zach Jackson. Jackson appears to be their main go to scorer as he averages just over 21 points per game for the Mavericks. No other player is over 14 points per game. As mentioned before he dropped 33 points in his last game and will be looking to score often tonight.
Jackson, was second-team All-Summit averaging a team-leading 17.6 points, 6.4 rebounds last season. He scored in double figures in all but three games and had four double-doubles, 12 20-point scoring performances and scored in double figures in 21 consecutive games from Nov. 25 to Feb. 14 last year.
What Will Happen
Iowa State is favored by just over 18 points tonight. Given the way they’ve been playing defense, and the way Nebraska-Omaha struggles minus one player on the offensive end, this should be a run away game. No difference in style here for Iowa State based on the match up. Expect much of the same from the Cyclones in this one. Not much else to say here but win.
