Iowa State downs Alabama State 79-53

In the first game of the season, many wondered how the freshman may look in their first action at Iowa State. They did not disappoint in Iowa State’s 79-53 win over Alabama State.

Iowa State quickly jumped out to a 13-3 lead with the starters being Lindell Wigginton, Nick Weiler-Babb, Marial Shayok, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Michael Jacobson. Alabama State battling hard and Iowa State’s sloppy play down the stretch in the first half kept things relatively close in the first half. The Cyclones would go into halftime with a 36-23 lead. Shayok led all Cyclones scorers at the break with 12 points.

The Cyclones would come out of halftime a little sluggish, and Alabama State would hang around a bit longer before Iowa State finally took things under control. The freshman would show why they were highly regarded coming into the season. Tyrese Hailiburton found his fellow freshman Talen Horton-Tcuker on this nice dish to push the lead.

Haliburton would later connect from three at the 13 minute mark and the Cyclones began to push the lead. Zion Griffin and George Conditt IV would join in on the fun with some of their own highlight buckets as the Cyclones put the game away.

Michael Jacobsen led all scorers with 17 points, and added 7 rebounds in his Cyclone debut. Lindell Wigginton and Marial Shayok added in 12 points of their own. Nick Weiler-Babb, Tyrese Haliburton and Talen Horton-Tucker each had four assists.

Zoran Talley and Cameron Lard each did not play in this game and will be suspended until December, Steve Prohm announced after the game.

Iowa State plays next on Friday at 6pm when Missouri makes the trip to Hilton Coliseum.
