Its Bowl Season!
Throughout the regular season I’m a hair better than the sharps with an 18-for-30 performance - hitting on 60% of my picks. What has made all the difference are the financial units I doubled down on, and boy have they come through in flying colors. Starting with a $1M monopoly balance, we have grown that up to $2.3M through 14 weeks. Some of my biggest winners were week three’s ISU +17.5 versus Oklahoma, and basically any team against KU.
Hop along for the ride for your last chance to replenish that bank account after a spendy Christmas season.
Here are your Big 12 Bets – BOWL WEEK EDITION
WEDNESDAY December 26th | Cheez-It Bowl in Phoenix, AZ | California (7-5) vs TCU (6-6) | 8:00 P.M. on ESPN | PICK ‘EM
The Horned Frog’s EEKED their way into bowl contention with season-ending victories versus Baylor and Okie State. They hope to carry that momentum into our first Big 12 game in the Cheez-It Bowl versus Cal. The winner gets a lifetime supply of Cheez-It’s, so this will incentivise our very own Gary Patterson to a whole new level.
Cal plays in a watered-down Pac-12 conference, and have kept the majority of their games close. Both teams supply above-average defenses, so look for a knock-down, drag-out fight with few points scored.
Vegas tabs this as a pick-em, and I’ll take the surging TCU Horny Toads for my pick, (but not so convincingly).
THURSDAY December 27th | Texas Bowl | Baylor (6-6) vs Vanderbilt (6-6) | 8:00 P.M. on ESPN | Vanderbilt -4.5
Is there a team more forgotten in college football than Vanderbilt? A school with less than 7,000 students and get their heads knocked in every week in the SEC. Except this year, coach Derek Mason has willed his Commodore team into a bowl game – and that is impressive in itself.
Baylor is still digging themselves out of a hole the size of a woolly mammoth, and the man with the shovel is coach Matt Rhule. This should be a great game, and both teams have something to prove.
I just have a feeling this is how its going to end…
Give me the Commodores and I’ll swallow the 4.5 points.
FRIDAY December 28th | Alamo Bowl | #24 Iowa State (8-4) vs #13 Washington State (10-2) | 8:00 P.M. on ESPN | Washington State -3.5
One of the best games of the entire bowl season - Mike Leach’s offensive firepower matched up against one of the better defenses in the entire country! If Iowa State wants to compete, they’ll need to get all their production out of Brock Purdy and company.
I foresee the Cyclones D staying competent, yet the Cougars flexing their muscles at times. You will just have to read more about it all in my preview next week!
That extra half-point makes all the difference here. Gotta take the Clones and the 3.5 points, and look for the potential upset and decent odds with the +150 moneyline bet.
MONDAY December 31st | Liberty Bowl | #23 Missouri (8-4) vs Oklahoma State (6-6) | 2:45 P.M. on ESPN | Missouri -8
Another shootout that is good for viewing pleasure. Missouri plays in the much weaker SEC EAST, yet have won their last four games, with the last two by a combined 71 POINTS. Oklahoma State is the true Jekyll and Hyde story, so Mike Gundy doesn’t even know which squad is going to show up.
Look for this game getting into the 40s for each team, and for Missouri to pull this one out.
As far as the spread goes, I’ll take the Cowboys and the 8 points they are getting.
Here are your Best Bets for BOWL WEEK!
FRIDAY December 28th | Camping World Bowl | #16 West Virginia (8-3) vs #20 Syracuse (9-3) | 4:15 P.M. on ESPN | West Virginia -1.5
Syracuse is the feel-good story of the season, and have a tremendous offensive attack with coach Dino Babers. West Virginia is just as good at putting points up, but, um, they don’t have their stud quarterback.
No Will Grier? Show Me The Money with the Orangemen!
I’ll take Syracuse and the 1.5 points for $250k.
SATURDAY December 29th | Orange Bowl | #4 Oklahoma (12-1) vs #1 Alabama (13-0) | 7:00 P.M. on ESPN | Alabama -14
OOOOH BOY! This one is going to be fun to watch. We could see a score of 45-40, 55-50, or heck 65-60. The over-under is set at 81, and I would highly recommend taking the OVER.
Bama is the better all-around team, yet OU can hold their own with Heisman-winning quarterback Kyler Murray. It might come down to a few stops, or honestly who has the ball last.
With that being said, this line is too high. I’ll take OU and the 14 points for $100k.
TUESDAY January 1st | Sugar Bowl | #15 Texas (9-4) vs #5 Georgia (11-2) | 7:45 P.M. on ESPN | Georgia -13
I know what you all are thinking. Big bad Georgia is just too much for Texas to handle. They play in the best conference (overrated SEC) and have a great defense (true, true). Tom Herman always gets his boys up for big games, and I guarantee he will do the same on prime-time television.
The talent is a lot closer than you think, and I could honestly see Texas pulling off the upset. Bowl games typically come down to who is more motivated, and these 13 points is a disrespect to the second-best team in the Big 12.
I’m all in on Texas, and would even entertain the Moneyline bet (+350) for the Longhorns. Give Me Bevo all day, and for $350k and the 13 points.
