In recent years, Iowa State stocked up on defensive lineman. This years class is a bit thin at the position, but that’s okay. The two players Iowa State was able to land so far for this class have great upside, and should be making some plays for the Cyclone defense for many years to come.
Blake Peterson - Defensive End
Blake Peterson is a 3-star defensive end prospect out of Beresford, South Dakota. Peterson has an 87 composite rating according to 247sports. He held offers from South Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota State.
Iowa State has been looking for that game changing defensive end and Blake Peterson may be it. He is very explosive off the snap and can beat you with power or speed. His play recognition is also off the charts. Peterson was also at one point a 4-star recruit but may have been bumped down due to the level of his competition in high school. We should see Peterson play four games for sure next year and that should determine if his redshirt gets burned or not.
Corey Suttle - Defensive End
Corey Suttle is a 3-star defensive end from Missouri. Suttle is a 86 composite rated prospect according to 247sports. He held offers from South Dakota, UNI and Indiana State.
Suttle has a blend of speed and power and his ability to set an edge and play disciplined football is something that jumps out to me. If Iowa State does in fact stay in the 3 down lineman defense, Suttle’s discipline will play right into that mold right away.
Iowa State will have plenty of depth at defensive end and these guys may have a difficult time hitting the rotation right away. Their careers should turn out to be pretty good in Ames though.
