Iowa State Thumped by Iowa

Things could’ve gone a lot better.

Iowa State and it’s young team was eager to take on their first road game, things didn’t exactly go as planned as Iowa State fell in Iowa City 98-84.

The game started out with a very fast pace and both teams came out firing. Teams traded shots for the first 10 minutes. Iowa was able to connect on more but turnovers kept Iowa State right in it early on. Iowa would continue to hit threes and grab offensive rebounds. Eventually the lead would be 45-38 for Iowa heading into the break.

Iowa State looked to bounce back early in the second half and eventually got the lead down to three before allowing Iowa to go on a huge run. Bad shot selection, not boxing out, and turnovers allowed Iowa to go on a huge run that ISU never could fully recover from.

Things were also chippy from the start. Iowa’s Pemsl and Iowa State’s Michael Jacobson got into it early, resulting in a double technical. At the end, Connor McCaffery got offended at Iowa State playing until the buzzer. This led to tempers getting flared on both sides, and the teams not shaking hands.

Tyler Cook and Isaiah Moss led the way for Iowa. Cook scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Moss scored 20 while notching 7 rebounds on the night.

No one on Iowa State played well. Talen Horton-Tucker had 21 points and Marial Shayok had 19 but both struggled with efficiency and turnovers. The two combined to be 16-34 from the floor and combined for 7 turnovers.

This was a bad performance for a young team in their first road game. The inexperienced showed up as well as the absence of Lindell Wigginton and Solomon Young. I have faith in Steve Prohm, and the team will be better as the season goes on.
