Is there any team we play regularly that we sustain more heartbreaks from than Kansas State? No, there is not.
Iowa State and Kansas State met at Arrowhead Stadium. Iowa State led 17-10 in the third quarter. Kansas State would roar back to take a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter. Iowa State quarterback Austen Arnaud led the Cyclones down the field late in the fourth quarter. He would connect on a pass for a touchdown to Jake Williams with 32 seconds left to bring the Cyclones within one.
Many felt the game was certainly heading to overtime, and it was all on Grant Mahoney’s leg to get them there. Then the patented kick to the groin happened. Kansas State defensive back Emmanuel Lamar got in the air, and blocked the PAT attempt, snatching away overtime and the game from Iowa State. Kansas State would win the game 24-23. Adding another moment to the long line of nut shots to the Cyclone faithful
What do our readers say about this horrific incident:
As a sophomore in high school I was there... pic.twitter.com/x5gyIkoeLH— Michael Heger (@big12champsISU) June 11, 2018
I was watching it with some friends at a bar here in DSM. A buddy afterwards said he had never gone from "happy to disappointed that quickly."— John Maly (@BDaleCYcler) June 11, 2018
In hindsight, it was a pretty average way to go down by KSU game standards.
I remember the group hug with the other couple we were at the game with, jumping up and down, after that Jake Williams. I also remember how deflated we were, but not necessarily surprised, when the PAT was missed.— Sara Van Arkel (@SiameseTree) June 11, 2018
Was active duty at the time, at a friend’s place. Convinced them to watch the ISU-KSU game along with whatever stupid SEC game they wanted to watch.— Ryan (@villanry) June 11, 2018
That single missed PAT got me free drinks for a month. They all felt so bad for me, the lone Cyclone fan there
Such a unique atmosphere, I remember it was so loud it was almost deafening after the TD, and then completely silent after the PAT— Tyler Thompson (@bigflyingtuna) June 11, 2018
I broke the seat in front of me (not kidding) and never wanted to chug a beer more in my life— Josh Williams (@jwillyISU) June 11, 2018
Grant Mahoney himself has spoken.
