Donnie Duncan in his years at Iowa State was 3-1 all time against Iowa, before Jim Criner came in and ruined the party. The 1985 edition of this game was the worst in series history, as the Hawkeyes won 57-3. From 1983 to 1997, Iowa won every single edition of the CyHawk series, with only two games being decided by a touchdown or less, but eleven being decided by two touchdowns or more.
Jim Walden kept it closer score-wise in the series, unfortunately, the Cyclones wouldn’t be able to break the streak until 1998.
Obviously, we never like losing to the Team Out East, but losing 15 consecutive CyHawk contests hurts more than a little bit. It hurt even more, given that a win over Iowa was often the barometer for a successful season back in the 80s and 90s.
Fortunately, Iowa State began its own streak in 1998, winning five straight, and seven out of the next ten. In fact, since 1998, the series is knotted up at ten apiece.
So, here’s to starting another Cyclone winning streak in the CyHawk series.
