Before the 2017-2018 basketball season began, it was filled with a ton of uncertainty. The Cyclones opened the season with a loss at Missouri, which was already a tall order to begin with. The opener at Hilton Coliseum against UW-Milwaukee was almost a certain win on paper, but then it wasn’t.
Iowa State came out in the first half guns-a-blazing, shooting over 50% from the field. Most would think would be enough to get well ahead, but it wasn’t The Panthers shot 54% and took a 39-32 lead into the half.
Most fans thought it was a fluke, it wasn’t. Milwaukee came out in the second half and put together an 11-2 run and stunned the Cyclone faithful. Hilton Magic had a glaring hole in it’s armor that night. Iowa State had won 44 of the last 50 in Hilton and UW-Milwaukee did not care at all.
The Panthers outshot Iowa State 48% to 38%, and the Cyclones only hit a total of five field goals in the last 20 minutes of the game, even going without a basket made in a 7 minute span at one point in the second half. The game ended as a 74-56 loss to UW-Milwaukee.
The 2017-2018 season was already pegged as likely to be a subpar season, and this loss did not help the case. This loss is certainly one to forget.
