Betting the Big 12: Week 5

I keep that train a-rolling!

Keep the train rolling, as I went 1 for 2 on my best last week, garnering an additional $100k in the bankroll. We are now 6 for 10 through four weeks, with an additional $650k of fake money in the bank account.

All aboard the VICTORY train!

Here are your bets for Week 5 of the Big 12 College Football Season

#12 West Virginia (3-0, 1-0) at #25 Texas Tech (3-1, 1-0) | 11:00 A.M. on ESPN2 | West Virginia -4

Two teams who have both exceeded expectations in this conference, and both have solid wins on their resume. Kliff Kingsbury and company are coming off an impressive victory over Okie State a week ago, and WVU has beaten both Tennessee and K-State handily.

Both of these teams have taken advantage of underrated Vegas spreads, covering each week by over 10 points per. I still think the Mountaineers are the better team, and Tech always starts the season off well, followed by a letdown.

Give me WVU and points.

Baylor (3-1, 1-0) at #6 Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0) | 2:30 P.M. on ABC | Oklahoma -23.5

The Baylor Bears and their 3-1 record have played all of Abilene-Christian, UTSA, and Kansas. In other words, creampuff central. They have yet to play anyone of OU’s caliber.

Oklahoma on the other hand, really struggled to put away Army last week, and appeared to overlook the Black Knights. They did pull it out in OT, by a score of 28-21.

Give me OU for the victory, but could be a toss up on the spread. I’m leaning towards a Sooner cover though.

#18 Texas (3-1, 1-0) at Kansas State (2-2, 0-1) | 2:30 P.M. on FS1 | Texas -8.5

Two of the most inconsistent teams in the Big 12. Texas has impressed as of late, with victories over USC and TCU, while K-State has struggled, recently losing to WVU by 29.

The biggest question – is Texas back? The previous two weeks seem to say so, while their defense is legit and QB Sam Ehlinger is coming into his own. Still they are about as reliable as the weatherman.

Kansas State has looked as strung out as a homeless man on the street, yet have always matched up well against the Longhorns.

I think Texas wins, but K-State and the Wizard Bill Snyder covers.

My top TWO BEST BETS of the Week

Oklahoma State (3-1, 0-1) at Kansas (2-2, 0-1) | 11:00 A.M. | Okie State -18.5

What did I tell everyone, Kansas is NOT BACK. Both teams lost a week ago, as Baylor took care of business against KU by a score of 26-7, and the Cowboys laid an egg versus Texas Tech. The Pokes will be taking their vengeance out on the lowly Jayhawks, and could put up 60+ points in this game.

I’ll take Boone Pickens’ money, and bet $250k on the Cowboys MINUS-18.5.

Iowa State (1-2, 0-1) at TCU (2-2, 0-1) | 6:00 P.M. on ESPNU | TCU -10.5

This is my lock of the week. Both teams are looked at unfavorably by the public, as each team has under-performed into the early part of the season. This will be a defensive game, but not quite to the effect of last year’s 14-7 Cyclone win. TCU has a turnover-prone quarterback and plays right into the hands of the vaunted ISU defense. Iowa State has a suspect o-line which plays right into the pass rush ability of TCU.

Both defenses will eat, and this game may come down to how special the special teams can be. Either way, far too many points for the Frogs.

I’ll put $150k on the Cyclones to cover the 10.5.
