Iowa State welcomed students back to Hilton Coliseum on Saturday with a 72-59 win against Oklahoma State Saturday evening. Marial Shayok lead the way with 20 points as the Cyclones ran their record to 4-2 in the Big 12 and 14-4 overall.
After a slow first couple of minutes, things finally picked up with back to back 3 pointers by Lindell Wigginton to push the lead to 9. The Cowboys fought back and took a brief 22-21 lead on a bizarre banked-in 3. Tyrese Haliburton hit a 3 to put the Cyclones back up, and a balanced effort with great 3 point shooting pushed the lead to 11 at halftime. Cam Lard put an exclamation point on the half with a huge dunk in the closing seconds.
Oklahoma State started the 2nd half on an 11-2 run before a couple of effort plays from Lard allowed the Cyclones to create some separation. After struggling to score for most of the 2nd half, Shayok hit a few jump shots to stretch the lead to 12 with 5 minutes left. The Cowboys couldn’t get close enough to seriously threaten from there.
Oklahoma State struggled to create offense throughout. They came in with a depleted rotation after dismissing 3 players earlier this week. Cameron McGriff paced them with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Lard had 12 points with some big offensive rebounds off the bench, and Wigginton chipped in 14 points on 4-7 shooting from 3.
Next up is a trip to Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night. The Cyclones will have a chance to sweep Kansas and become a clear front runner for the Big 12 championship.
