David Montgomery Declares for the NFL Draft

One of the best players in Iowa State football history declares for the NFL Draft.

NCAA Football: Alamo Bowl-Iowa State vs Washington State Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

After an incredible season and career at Iowa State, David Montgomery has decided to declare for the NFL Draft, to the surprise of almost nobody.

Montgomery’s career stacks up as one of the best in Cyclone history as he totaled 2,925 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns on 624 total carries (4.7 yards per carry), and 582 receiving yards on 71 catches (8.2 yards per catch).

Without a doubt, his lasting legacy at Iowa State will be his ability to create yards out of thin air by breaking almost every one-on-one tackle he faced, all while never* fumbling.

*Liberty Bowl fumble was garbage and should have been overturned, Alamo Bowl fumble was never reviewed

Montgomery’s decision to declare for the draft comes as no surprise to anyone, and is the best option for him at this time. Running backs have a notoriously short life span in the NFL, and are somewhat easily replaced due to a surplus of good backs coming out of college, as well as NFL offenses becoming more oriented towards the vertical passing game. His stock is as high as it probably ever will be, so he needs to take his money while it’s there.

There’s also a lot of belief that David has a chance to be an even better player in the NFL, as he will most definitely be playing behind a better offensive line that will be capable of at least letting him get to the line of scrimmage before having to make somebody miss.

We’ll be doing a full recap of David’s Iowa State career in the near future so keep an eye out for that.

While any team would miss a player of his caliber, Iowa State fortunately has a lot of talent left in the running back room, as well two top-10 running backs coming into the program.

We wish all the best for David on his journey to the NFL, and my guess is that whomever drafts him will sell quite a few of his jerseys soon after.
