Key Matchups
149
Degen had a rough out last weekend. He lost to Jeffries of Oklahoma and if not for an unfortunate injury to his opponent he likely would have also taken a loss against Boo Lewellan of Oklahoma State. As result his ranking, and seeding for Big XIIs and NCAAs, has taken a hit. He’ll get the opportunity to get things back on track on Friday as he faces SDSU’s highest ranked wrestler in #18 Henry Pohlmeyer. His losses last week were from a bad matchup (Jeffries) and getting outclassed by a returning AA (Lewellan) so there’s no reason to think he can’t right the ship and pick up the first of several wins as he moves towards an end of the season rubber match against #8 ranked Brock Mauller of Missouri.
184
Outside of Pohlmeyer the only other SDSU wrestler with a winning record is #33 Zach Carlson at 184, making this a key match by default. Carlson doesn’t have any notable wins but recently he has had some close matches against top wrestlers, losing 1-3 to #6 ranked Drew Foster of UNI and 6-7 to #12 ranked Nino Bonaccorsi of Pitt. So he definitely isn’t a pushover. Colbray should pick up a win here but if he doesn’t come ready to wrestle this is probably SDSU’s best opportunity to pick up an upset.
Prediction
Even with a healthy Seth Gross this wouldn’t be a great year for SDSU. And missing him plus having Iowa State able to counter their best two wrestlers with higher ranked guys should make this a mismatch. I think Iowa State wins this one 33-4.
Next Up
The wrestling team will be right back at it with a meet against a much more competitive Utah Valley squad at 2:00PM on Sunday, February 3rd.
