Not A Fighting Chance: Iowa State Falls At WVU

Things are not good

NCAA Basketball: Iowa State at West Virginia Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

Iowa State was widely regarded as one of the top teams in the Big 12, now they have fallen from the clouds and are fighting to get back up. Iowa State needed a win against one of the worst Big 12 teams in West Virginia. Instead the Moutaineers took it to Iowa State an won big time 90-75. Iowa State’s second double digit loss in a row.

The Cyclones were dealt an early blow this morning as Marial Shayok was announced as out for the game with a foot injury, and things just did not get any better from there. Right from the start of the game Iowa State struggled and add in some hot shooting from West Virginia the Cyclones stood no chance.

Iowa State went into the break down 21 points, the largest lead by West Virginia on the night. In the second half they decided to make things interesting by cutting the Mountaineer lead down to 10 but instantly let West Virginia blow it back up to 15 points.

It just was not a good night and Iowa State did not put up a fight at all. Lindell Wigginton led the way for Iowa State with 17 points on the night. Tyrese Hailburton added in 12 and Talen Horton Tucker added in 12.

There is sure to be plenty of discussion about Talen Horton-Tucker after tonight. Late in the second half he was slow to come down the court and get in the huddle and Michael Jacobson was not having any of it and let Horton-Tucker know about it. Hopefully this talented group can pull something together before tournament play begins.

Iowa State will take on Texas Tech this Saturday in the final regular season game of the year. I am sure we are all well prepared for it by now.

Stay tuned to WRNL for all things basketball.
