Iowa State Softball picked up their first win of the 2019 ShareSLO Mustang Classic this evening after dropping their morning game to Utah State 1-10.
Sami Williams started the game with a double at the top of the first. Hannah Carter’s single would advance Williams to third base, and Carter herself after reaching base, would steal second. Sally Woolpert was up to bat next, but she struck out swinging. Mikayla Ramos singled to left, and Williams would come home to make the score Iowa State 1 Cal Poly 0. Unfortunately for Iowa State, two base runners would be left on base as Taylor Nearad flied out to center and Kasey Simpson fouled out to second base.
The Mustangs wouldn’t have much success on their half of the inning. Noa Yakir popped up a hit that was caught by the Cyclones second baseman, Kasey Simpson. Noellah Ramos singled up the left side and would eventually make it to third thanks to an Iowa State throwing error, but she would be left on base.
The second inning started with a Kaylee Bosworth fly out to left field, but Sydney Stites got on base by way of a single. Kirsten Caudle popped up and out to the shortstop and Sami Williams would get another hit, a single, past the third baseman. Unfortunately, Hannah Carter grounded out to second base and Sydney and Sami were left on.
The bottom of the second was a three in and out for Cal Poly.
The fourth inning featured two more runs for the Cyclones. Talyn Lewis was hit by a pitch which allowed Kaylee Bosworth to earn the run. Woolpert had a sacrifice fly to left field, and Caudle came home to make the score Iowa State 3 Cal Poly 0.
Noellah Ramos walked and she slowly made her way around the diamond thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Makenna Young and a single from Hailey Martin. Crimson Kaiser made it to base via. a fielder’s choice and Ramos came home to make it Iowa State 3 Cal Poly 1.
At the top of the fifth, Taylor Nearad doubled to right centerfield. Kasey Simpson grounded out to the pitcher. Kaylee Bosworth came up to the plate and smashed the game’s only triple which allowed Nearad to come home to make the score Iowa State 4 Cal Poly 1.
The bottom of the fifth opened with two walks, one for Sydney James and one for Sarah Wulff to put them on first and second base. A sacrifice bunt by Yakir moved the duo to second and third, and up next was Ramos. Ramos hit a single and James came home to make the final tally stand at Iowa State 4 Cal Poly 2.
The Cyclones play again tomorrow for the second day of the 2019 ShareSLO Mustang Classic. The Cyclones will play Utah State at noon and Cal Poly at 5 p.m. Iowa time.
