Offensive Player To Watch: Tarique Milton

Tarique Milton is poised to be Iowa State’s top receiver.

Tarique Milton is out to prove that life after Hakeem Butler is going to be just fine. So far, between him and Deshaunte Jones, it appears that is the case. This isn’t to take anything away from Deshuante Jones, who is a good receiver in his own right, but Milton’s ceiling appears to be higher.

Milton was able to haul in 8 receptions for 144 yards, including a 73 yard touchdown reception in the second half, against Iowa. His speed combined with his reliable hands are what make him a prime target for Brock Purdy. I want to see him take another step this weekend against Louisiana Monroe.

Milton’s prime role will be in those one-on-one situations that we saw Hakeem Butler excel at a season ago, and all the time Brock Purdy and Milton spent in the offseason working together to get their chemistry on the same page for this season paid off against the Hawks. His ability to keep working on his route running and continually beat defenses will be extremely important going forward.

Louisiana-Monroe’s defense will provide a better challenge in the passing game than most might expect, but Tarique’s ability to stretch the field vertically could be critical in giving the Cyclone offense space to flex its muscles and move the ball downfield.
