To start the 2019 season, Baylor appears to be much improved defensively from a season ago. While their competition hasn’t had much offensive power, the stats want to make you believe that Iowa State will have a pretty stiff challenge in their Big 12 opener in Waco. This is exactly why I am choosing the most important offensive player, Brock Purdy.
Purdy is coming off a 6 touchdown performance against Louisiana Monroe. While it appears to be a great confidence booster, I want to see him follow up a great game with consistency. We have seen him respond to adversity this season and come back to put his team in position to win all three games. We have yet to see him follow up big time success this season and going on the road will show us just that.
Baylor currently is currently the 20th-ranked defense in the country, and has yet to give up a passing touchdown this season. Iowa State will be the most skilled offense they have faced this season but Matt Rhule has his guys playing well and it will be a game that Brock Purdy will have to play turnover free. Especially with the offensive firepower that Baylor has been capable of.
We certainly won’t see 72 points by Iowa State in this one, but I think Brock Purdy will have his chances in both the running and passing game, even if the plays aren’t as explosive. If Purdy remains calm and doesn’t force anything, they Cyclones will be well-positioned all afternoon. Another important thing for the offense will be limiting three and outs. The temperatures are expected to be in the high 90s, and it would be wise for this offense to not make the defense be on the field more than they have to.
Should be a fun one on Saturday.
