Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 6

It’s not as bad as you think

NCAA Football: Iowa State at Baylor Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

It wasn’t the result any of us were looking for on Saturday, but there’s still plenty of reasons to remain optimistic after a strong fourth-quarter showing last weekend. The Cyclones are a few quality wins away from rocketing up these rankings.

On to the show!

1. Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0; defeated Texas Tech 55-16)
Last Week’s Ranking: 1
Oklahoma became the sixth school in NCAA history to win 900 games on Saturday, and 901 is a shoo-in with the Sooners heading to Lawrence this weekend. Meanwhile, the Big 12 was made for Jalen Hurts, and Jalen Hurts was made for the Big 12. Tua who?
This Week: at Kansas (2-3, 0-2)

2. Texas (3-1, 1-0; idle)
Last Week’s Ranking: 2
The Longhorns exit their bye week with a trip to Morgantown, and though West Virginia is unbeaten in the Big 12, well, the win was against the lowly Jayhawks. Texas does have to overcome a number of injuries on defense, though, a tall order considering they currently rank as the 102nd overall defense in allowing 436 total yards per game.
This Week: at West Virginia (3-1, 1-0)

3. Oklahoma State (4-1, 1-1; defeated Kansas State 26-13)
Last Week’s Ranking: 4
Huge statement from the mullet and company in their win over Kansas State on Saturday, and the Cowboys should be able to sleepwalk in Lubbock this week. Keep an eye on this team, which ranks tenth in the NCAA for total offense, averaging 532 yards per game.
This Week: at Texas Tech (2-2, 0-1)

4. Baylor (4-0, 1-0; defeated Iowa State 23-21)
Last Week’s Ranking: 5
The surprising Bears remained undefeated after eeking out a win against the Cyclones last week. They kept their composure - overcoming kicking woes and blowing a 20-point lead - to notch their first Big 12 win of the season and highlight how far the program has come in just a few years. That earned Matt Rhule an immediate contract extension.
This Week: at Kansas State (3-1, 0-1)

5. TCU (3-1, 1-0; defeated Kansas 51-14)
Last Week’s Ranking: 7
The Frogs handled business as expected, blew out the Jayhawks, and their reward is a trip to Ames this weekend. They are playing typical Gary Patterson football, holding opponents to just 246 total yards per game - good for fourth in the country.
This week: at Iowa State (2-2, 0-1)

6. Kansas State (3-1, 0-1; Lost to Oklahoma State 26-13)
Last Week’s Ranking: 3
No shame in losing to a very talented Oklahoma State team on the road, but the Wildcats rush defense was non-existent. Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard ran for 296 yards - yes, you read that right - on just 25 carries. In case you’re wondering, that’s more than the entire Kansas State offense accounted for (244).
This Week: vs. Baylor (4-0, 1-0)

7. Iowa State (2-2, 0-1; lost to Baylor 23-21)
Last Week’s Ranking: 6
The Cyclones’ effort at a monumental fourth quarter comeback was admirable, but not enough. It will be interesting to see how an offense that struggled through three quarters handles a stout TCU defense - there’s still plenty to play for in Ames, and an October to remember can begin with a win on Saturday.
This Week: vs. TCU (3-1, 1-0)

8. West Virginia (3-1, 1-0; idle)
Last Week’s Ranking: 8
The Mountaineers had an extra week to prepare for Texas, and they likely needed every bit of it. Though 1-0 in the Big 12 is all that they could have hoped for to this point, their 5-point win a few weeks ago over cellar dweller Kansas is more of a cause for concern than optimism. A solid showing against a top-ranked opponent on national TV would go a long ways for this rebuilding team.
This Week: vs. Texas (3-1, 1-0)

9. Texas Tech (2-2, 0-1; lost to Oklahoma 55-16)
Last Week’s Ranking: 9
Though ugly, last week’s result against Oklahoma is a result the majority of teams will suffer this week. No rest for the weary, however, as the upstart Cowboys come to town with a lot on the line.
This Week: vs. Oklahoma State (4-1, 1-1)

10. Kansas (2-3, 0-2; lost to TCU 51-14)
Last Week’s Ranking: 10
LOL - have fun against Jalen Hurts.
This Week: vs. Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0)

Big one this week in Ames.
