Iowa State Supporting Staff Steps Up, Cyclones Win

Ashley Joens Has A Rare Off Game

NCAA Womens Basketball: Baylor at Iowa State Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

The Cyclones have got off to a rocky start. This team had a lot of expectations, a tremendous player in Ashley Joens, but the success of this team will rely on the players around Joens. Tonight, they showed up.

The aforementioned Joens, the nation’s leading scorer coming into tonight, was held to zero, yes zero, points in the first half. Iowa State shot abysmally from the 3 point line but found ways to stick in the game.

The two biggest contibutors that stepped up in the absence of Joens were freshman Lexi Dornaski who had a coming out party of sorts this game. The highly touted freshman was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line and 5-9 from the field. Iowa State senior Kristin Scott stepped up big in the second half, she had 18 points in the game and 7 huge offensive rebounds.

The younger Joens, Aubrey, outscored her older sister tonight. I don’t think that will happen all that much this year, but Joens’ (the younger) played great and is just another stud in this freshman class. Good teams win games when things go right, great teams win when things go wrong.
