Cyclones Fall To Oklahoma 66-56

First win for the Sooners in Ames in years. Pain.

NCAA Basketball: Baylor at Iowa State The Register-USA TODAY NETWORK

Lon Kruger’s bunch is leaving Ames happy after claiming their first win in Hilton Coliseum since early in the Hoiberg era. Austin Reeves lead the Sooners with 20 points in a 66-56 win. The difference in this one came early on, as the Sooners came running out of the gates, and Iowa State had no answers in the first half. At it’s worst, it was 30-9 Oklahoma. The Cyclones hit a few shots late to close the gap to 16 points at halftime.

With the game in striking distance, boy did the Cyclones strike. A 20-4 run in the 2nd half gave us all fond memories of a certain game against Oklahoma in 2015. A Tre Jackson 3 even gave Iowa State a brief lead. Unfortunately, without Uncle Brent Musberger to give us a “mercy” call, it was not meant to be this time. Oklahoma quickly stretched the lead to 10 points again, and this Iowa State team didn’t have the horses to make another comeback, although some Iowa State backers may have been pleased with the final margin.

Coach Prohm’s guys are running out of time to get a Big 12 win, and with the team now sitting at 2-15 overall, the last 2 weeks of the regular season are about getting these players a victory. Rasir Bolton lead the Cyclones with 14 points. Solomon Young had 12 points and a nice 6-9 shooting night with 8 rebounds.

Iowa State will next be in action on Tuesday night with a road game against #2 Baylor. The Bears haven’t played in 3 weeks and teams haven’t typically played well off COVID pauses. They play the games for a reason, right? We’ll see.
