Last Time Out
Iowa State dominated Kansas to finish the regular season on a high note, winning 83-53. Ashley Joens once again led the way for the Cyclones, scoring 23 points to go with 14 boards with a pair of steals and assists. Kristin Scott was close behind with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Kylie Feuerbach earned her second Big 12 Freshman of the Week honor with her performance against the Jayhawks (11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals).
The Longhorns have been a rollercoaster this season. They play well against all the good teams but can’t seem to pick up easy wins in the games that are gimmes. Texas did however sweep the season series against the ‘Clones - both double digit victories for UT. I think the best comparison for this team is a slower paced ISU team, their defense puts up similar numbers but their offense doesn’t score as much and isn’t as efficient.
A staple for Texas is their post play and ability to rebound, where ISU hasn’t had the most success this season. It’ll be a great test for each squad in the opening round in Kansas City on Friday morning.
Opponent Player to Watch
Projected No. 1 overall pick Charli Collier just declared for the draft, so yeah, she’s the real deal. Averaging 20.9 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks on 52% shooting, Collier has been an issue for the Cyclones in both matchups this season. In the first game, she had 14 points and 14 boards, in the second game she had 22 and 19. It will be a lot different this time around however, Iowa State will make her the focal point of the defense in order to get her under control. The Cyclones will really have to D up to stop Collier.
What Will Happen
You think I’m going to pick against the ‘Clonies now? Not a chance.
