Iowa State improves their final push of regular season play to close out the season winning 7 of their last 9. The Cyclones buried Kansas with a 30 point win. With this loss Kansas will limp out of the regular season without winning a game since early February, including a loss to ISU that will result in the series sweep of the Jayhawks for the twister sisters.
The game started off seeming like it would be a closely contested matchup like their most recent meeting, this was until the Cyclones made a late second half run that would send them into the break with a double digit lead. Kansas retook the lead with a little over 4 minutes left to play in the second quarter until Iowa State began their takeover. Kristin Scott who stuffed the stat sheet finishing with 15 points, 8 rebounds, along with a pair of blocks and steals, took over late in the second half to give ISU the push they needed to blow this game out of the water.
Once the second half started Iowa State did not let up on the momentum they built up to close out the first half. The Cyclones would extend their lead by 19 heading into the fourth in large part to only giving up 10 points in the third quarter. A massive team effort on defense saw to it that Kansas wouldn’t score more than 16 in an entire quarter the whole night.
The 4th quarter went exactly how most blowouts do. The Cyclone were able to get the bench more involved which will allow them to build up some needed experience headed into the post season. Kansas customarily tried to fight themselves back into the game, but Iowa State pulled out their highest scoring quarter of the game which fully sealed the 30 point victory.
Playing outstanding team defense, and doubling up on the amount of threes your opponent hits is usually going to set you up for success, and that’s exactly what happened tonight. With such a big win headed into the Big 12 tournament this pushes Iowa State into the 4th spot in the conference. This should give the Cyclones even more confidence to help them make a push for a solid conference tournament run.
