Last Time Out
Iowa State was dominant over Michigan State in an 80-49 victory. As a team, the Cyclones shot 47% (30-64) from the field and 39% (9-23) from beyond the arc. Overall, Iowa State rolled over the Spartans in every facet of the game.
Stephanie Soares led the way with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 3 assists. Emily Ryan added 17 points, 8 assists, and 4 boards while Denae Fritz had 10 points and 5 rebounds on 3-6 shooting from downtown.
About North Carolina
The 8th-ranked Tarheels come in at 5-0, fresh off of their win over No. 18 Oregon in the PKI semi-final game. UNC is similar to the Cyclones in that they can score efficiently, but the Heels aren’t really a threat from three-point range. They shoot 52.5% on twos, while just 29% from downtown. Worth noting, they shoot just 65.5% from the charity stripe, both of those ranking outside the top 200 in the country. They score 60.5% of their points on twos, which puts them in the top 50 for that category. For reference, Iowa State scores 45.7% of their points on twos.
UNC is definitely the best rebounding team Iowa State has seen to this point. They snag 16 offensive rebounds per game and a grand total of 46.8 rebounds per contest (ISU 45.2). North Carolina certainly has the length to hang with ISU’s rebounding attack. The Tar Heels also take care of the ball, with 1.39 assist/turnover (ISU 1.5) ratio thus far. This should be a fun one as both teams are off to terrific starts this year.
Opponent Player to Watch
Alyssa Ustby has been the best player for UNC to this point in the season. The junior guard was All-ACC 2nd team a season ago and has been excellent so far in the 2022-23 campaign. At 6-1, she can play guard or forward. She pours in 16.2 points per game and grabs 8.2 rebounds per game to lead her squad. She’ll be the star player for UNC today.
What Will Happen
Not the easiest win, but Iowa State pulls away late and brings home the PKI title. “North Carolina, East West Carolina, hell the Carolina Panthers. Don’t matta. Clones in fo’.”
