During the Big 12's annual football media days in Texas, the league announced Joens as the deserving winner of this esteemed award, which was determined through voting by the conference's athletic directors. Hailing from Iowa City, Joens presented an impressive case for her accolades, having secured the Cheryl Miller Award for the third consecutive year as the nation's top small forward. Additionally, she was named the Big 12 Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season and unanimously selected as a member of the All-Big 12 first team.
